OS: Windows 98
CPU/Ram: Pentium/40MB
Product: Toshiba Satellite 200CDS
Comment:

I am trying to install the CD-ROM drivers
for this Toshiba Satellite 200CDS, so that
I can install Windows 98. I downloaded
the drivers, and tried to follow the
confusing Toshiba directions, but it would
not work. How could I get it to work? An
exact how-to guide would be great.
Thanks a million!

What is in your config.sys & autoexec.bat?

Do you have a Win98 Startup Disk? If you do that's all you need. The oakcdrom.sys driver on the Startup disk supports all IDE CD drives I know of.
If you don't, if you have access to a computer that aleady has Win98 on it, go to Add/Remove Programs click on the Startup Disk tab and make one. Or a Win98SE Startup Disk will probably work fine as well.

If you don't have access to a computer that aleady has Win 98 or 98SE on it, search the web for: Win 98 Startup Disk - it will already have support for your CD drive.

It also has drivers for most other drives as well, if yours isn't IDE.

You may want to check The Count's links here:

http://computing.net/windows95/wwwb...

Typically the drivers on the 98 bootdisk don't work with Toshiba. But it's just a matter of having the right driver in config.sys and mscdex in autoexec.bat. So as M2 says, post back contents of those files.

Hi nashman50, M2, Tubesandwires, DAVEINCAPS, hi everyone

Thanks, DAVEINCAPS, for the reminder. :-)
I now remember that I have some cleaning up to do at my online, limited to 10 MB, storage space.
Is it coincidence? The thread referred too turned 3 years old a few day's ago.

nashman50, you may want to add this link to your favorites: Toshiba Satellite 200CDS

I got it to work. Since I only had one drive bay I found this download on some link on this website (computing.net), and it did everything for me as long as I had the Windows 98 boot disk. Thanks for the help everyone!

Hi nashman50, M2, Tubesandwires, DAVEINCAPS, hi everyone

Congratulations!

According to the detailed specs available at the link above the laptop was "originally" shipped with a external, swappable, FDD/CD-ROM drive bay. Meaning one could have either the Floppy Disk Drive or the CD-ROM drive installed in the laptop and the other device in the external adapter.
For that reason I didn't make any mention of Load Windows using swapable drives.

Was it by any chance the same link you found? :-/

Anyway, thanks for posting back it's very much appreciated!

Heh - my suspicions are confirmed

Quite often with these 'problem' installs, it is later revealed that there is only one drive bay - aka 'swappable'

It's a bit unusual, (I've yet to actually encounter one in RL) and well worth mentioning right off the bat

I'm glad that it all worked out

Yeah, maybe that's something that should be asked every time a laptop cdrom driver or installation problem pops up here.

I get here as opportunity permits. The owner of the site where I moderate has purchased another help forum because it was about to go down from lack of funding, which automatically made me a mod on that site as well. We've been busy cleaning/dressing it up. But I always come home to C.N. ;>)

As well, I cracked a bone in my toe and missed a week of work, so I've been pulling lots of overtime to make up that lost income. ;>(

I have a Toshiba 105cs with a rear-mount cd-rom attachment. The cd-rom will arrive any day now from ebay. I fear I shall need drivers for this unit, although I believe the cd-rom was designed for the 105cs. I followed the above link to the Toshiba site but found no cd-rom drivers for the 105cs model. Am I outta luck or will the cd-rom and the laptop unite and communicate?
Thanks for any and all assistance
Froogull (my ebay handle, for sake of argument)

Check The Count's link in #5 above. If they don't work you may want to start a new thread so more people will see it.
