The memory capability, which enables Claude to retain information from previous interactions, had been restricted to paying subscribers until now. ChatGPT already provided this functionality to its free tier users.
Anthropic simultaneously introduced a chat history transfer tool. Users joining Claude can now migrate their conversation data from competing AI platforms including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Microsoft Copilot through a straightforward copy-paste procedure.
The migration process requires users to request their current AI assistant to export conversation data as a code block. This exported information gets pasted into Claude’s settings within the Memory section, followed by selecting “Add to memory.”
The transfer process can require up to 24 hours for completion. Users receive the ability to examine what information Claude has retained about them, with options to modify or delete any unwanted data.
ChatGPT has yet to introduce a comparable transfer tool for incoming users. Google has development underway for its own version, though a release date remains unannounced.
These feature additions arrive following discord between Anthropic and the Pentagon. The company declined to permit its technology for mass domestic surveillance operations or fully autonomous weapon systems.
President Trump issued directives requiring federal agencies to cease Claude usage. The Pentagon additionally designated Anthropic as a supply-chain risk.
Claude Reaches Top App Store Position Following Government Controversy

Understanding the Memory Transfer Process
