Hi, I'm building myself a small and silent PC. I dont need it to be super powerful so I settled for a old slimline HP Vectra. I'll be making a wooden case with a piano black face so it settles in with my 70's audio equipment. I decided on 98SE because the soundcard (the most important part in this system) only has stable drivers for 98 and because I was wanting some DOS compatibility. I've got lots of software which will work on 98 to cover what I need from it.

With such a nice classy case and purpose I think 98SE is too freaking ugly. I also DONT want a theme that makes it look like I have XP or Vista because thats not what I'm aiming for. Does anybody know of a theme for 98SE to make it a little more slick?

Also, any tweaks to make using 98SE a little easier? I'd just like to give it a modern edge thats all. I might consider windows 2000 for some better plug and play connectivity if I can find stable drivers for my sound card. Thanks for any help/input.

Oooh, cool. There is a LOT of stuff there. Fantastic, thanks for that!
I guess I'll be installing the USB patches and media player 10 first.. then experiment with the rest..

I don't think Media Player 10 will work with Win98.

As far as I've determined, the USB patches from here:

http://www.technical-assistance.co....

seem to work for just about everything I've thrown at them. But I'd caution you on the "UNOFFICIAL Windows98 Second Edition Service Pack 2.1a". I've never gotten it to work properly (i.e.---without having Win98 just up and die) before. Maybe it's just something about the systems I've tried it on, but that was what moved me to use WinXP on my fastest system (Win98 just wouldn't work anymore); though I can't say I regret the move to XP. Never even tried the WMP10 hack, since there are still several other (better) media players that still work under Win98...

Hi, I'll be testing the Unofficaial patches/ updates/ Upgrades on a Virtual machine before I actually install it on the computer. Its quicker to experiment with 98SE when your using a 3.2GHz Core 2 Duo with a 'Undo' button rather than a 400MHz P2 that you have to re-format with every problem.

"I don't think Media Player 10 will work with Win98."

Thats one of the Unofficial upgrades. From what I understand it copies alot of Windows XP system files over.

If I can get a USB patch going that pretty much means Win 2000 isnt something I need to consider anymore. Thats 1 big hurdle down.

As you mentioned swapping with earlier software, can tell you now that there will be conflict problems between the 16 bit and the 32 bit systems. If you are on 16 or 32 then no problem. If there is a difference, then problems lie ahead. I find for file transferrs, is OK to go from a 32 to a 16, but before the 16 will go to the 32 there has to be zero files named such. You have to hand delete the duplicate.
