1] Why is it that -- only sometimes -- IE 5.5 will not stop searching for something I have decided to give up on, after I repeatedly press "stop?" The hour glass/egg timer (sorry, I'm blanking out here)will not go away and give up.
I keep up with the various browser hijacking possibilities (spyware, changed home page, etc.), and am pretty sure this could not be it, unless it's something that routinely gets by Spybot, BHODemon, etc.
2] I have very low system resources and have pared down and improved all I can that's worth it for my cheap old laptop at this point. Is it really worth overextending my system more to accomodate IE 6.0, as long as I have antispyware programs, a firewall and the latest patches to close off as many vulnerabilities as possible?
3] How come sometimes -- again only occasionally -- clicking on hyperlinks from IE 5.5 takes me absolutely nowhere? Even after I shut down and start over? Every now and then, BANGING on the links seems to get me through eventually! But I don't think it's a dirty mouse problem because when this is happening my mouse works fine in all other applications.
THANK YOU as always!!

Re: #2
I like IE6sp1
I find it to be about 15% faster than earlier versions. It also handles cookies better.I am using Win98FE.

IE repair! Nifty! Had never heard of that! A quick search showed what to do, and I have, and we'll see! = )

My head spins about opinions regarding IE6 when I read responses on this website.
Some folks seem to swear by it, others swear at it. I have seen several postings suggesting that it is not "really" suitable for W98 but designed for XP.
I must own up to chickening out from downloading it. When I upgraded from my snappy IE501+SP2 to IE55+SP2 I found that it took much longer to "go off line". Seems that each upgrade makes things a little worse.
It maybe that upgrading IE is another one of those oddities that depends on your computer spec and possibly what software you have loaded. You find out whether it is good or bad after you have tried it.
I would probably risk it if I ever had need to reformat (avoided since Nov 99). A clean install could make all the difference.

I liked IE5.5sp2 and when I installed MS Money 2002 I was forced into upgrading to IE6. I was afraid for the same reasons.
I spent the money on MS Money so I went for it.I now see colored scroll bars on sites that had not had them before and I am certain that it responds to opening pages faster then 5.5. I am using cable.
When V6 came out a lot of people did have problems but before I upgraded the service pack had come out and apparently eliminated many of the complaints.
One thing that I am not a fan of but do not see to often is the "Media bar" that opens when clicking on a Media player file while on the internet. It is very XP like. I have gotten used to it though.
Other than these three things (cookie handing, colored scroll bars and 15% increase in speed) I find no differences to IE5.5sp2.
I had never had any problem with opening a new window with it like many complained about. In that case there are fixes too.
I do not advocate that one 'should' upgrade but I do find that it did not hurt to do so. I also find three positive results and one, not negative, just somewhat undesirable.
Just my two cents worth.

Sorry but I forgot to mention that when I used IE5.5sp2 it would take my cabled browser in excess of 20 seconds to display the first opened page. (usually My Computing.net) and now it is "Done" in about 7 seconds.
I originally believed it was related to the particular configuration of my machine.
I have been running this Win98FE since July of '99. I once reinstalled Windows on top of itself just for the exercise and in hopes of fixing an annoyance I had with Shortcut's shortcut keys (Ctrl+Alt+X) were in need of repair. It did not help but installing IE6sp1 did repair them. It was a side benefit. I use them often.
Just my four cents worth I could say,
Bryan

Don't install IE 6.0 on 98,98SE or Win ME.Ive had alot of ntrouble with bie6.o on 98 98 SE and ME.IE 5.5 sp2 works best on All Win 9x.But for some stupid reason Microsoft had the stupid idea to take IE 5.5 off there website. You can find it at the link below.
