Hello,

This forum now runs a check (due to a massive failure of self-regulation). The check determines if the Original Poster has a 9 in the Exact OS field. If not, the system can be sure the poster is not running either Windows 98 or Windows 95. The post procedure then fails, and the user is instructed to post on the correct forum. As you will note, my OS in this posting is Windows 98. No one is even allowed to post original messages on this forum unless this test is past. It is not a warning, its a fatal error.

This should make all our lives much, much easier.

Justin

That's a great idea - I don't know why there have been so many posts better served in WinXP made here lately. Sure, the links are close together on the left, but the reverse rarely occurs.

I agree; Computing.Net participants need to proofread

Hello,

If the feature works with few complaints, I might add it to other forums that are having problems. However, this was by far the worst.

Dan, if you know the answers to XP questions, you should look there too!

Great idea. I suspect the real reason we get so many is that there are far more XP types around to get it either right or wrong.

I can see just one possible snag. Posters like to keep their own system details but are sometimes posting about another machine.

My own feeling is this is a pretty small price to pay. It doesn't take much for them to temporarily update their OS to match what they are posting about.

In fact this could be an aside benfit because from time to time posters have had to explain (later) that they were talking about a W95/98 machine after all. It is far better to indicate the OS, and all the other details, for the machine you are actually posting about.

I wish you well, knowing that you have tried many ideas to cure this problem.

Hello Justin,

Ever since CN instituted the Exact OS field, I noticed that from time to time there are people who for one reason or another filled in anything but the exact OS. Is there a way whereby you can modify the system check to prevent the posting of those who don't bother to state what machine they have? Just a thought :-)

Hello,

XpUser, that is so broad, it would be hard to check with a piece of code. Seeing if the OS has a 9 in it is easy. Analyzing whether or not it is non-sensical is beyond my programming capabilities. I just don't have any idea how to do that.

DerekW, a user can override his OS settings at post time simply by filling in something else. There was an error in the code preventing that from working unless he changed both OS and CPU/Ram. However, I figured that out at the same time I instantiated this new failsafe and corrected it.

Hi, all. I am a new member of the forum.

Well, it looks like I passed the post test.

Yes, indeed, I am in fact running genuine Windows 95 (and yes, it runs as good as XP!)

Stephen Fox,

Glad to hear. Ideally, all users doing the right thing should be completely unaware of this new message.
