Hi,

I have an IBM Thinkpad 760XL here which I am trying to install a Network card into it's PCMCIA card slot.

The card itself has installed perfectly first time.

However, it is unable to work because IRQ Steering is not enabled.

There is a button to "Click here to enable IRQ Steering" and when I click on that, I am then prompted to re-start my computer.

So I re-start.

But when I go back into Device Manager - same thing - it still says it cannot work because IRQ Steering is not enabled, Click here to enable it.

Similarly, if I go into the "PCI Bus" node in Device Manager and enable it there, I am prompted to re-start. But once again after re-starting, it is not enabled.

There is also very little scope for manually changing the IRQ's for different devices as which ever ones I try to change, it says that "This resource setting cannot be modified"

I am using the latest drivers for the network card.

I have exhaustively searched google and various other search engines.

IBM's website was about as helpful as a fart in a wind tunnel.

And IBM's telephone support was even worse!

However, from my research into this problem, it does seem to be an issue which largely affects the IBM ThinkPad 760 range.

I would be very grateful if any other ThinkPad users have encountered this problem and could offer a solution

Many thanks

Simon

Try enabling IRQ steering in the BIOS and disable the option in the BIOS that says it has a Plug and Play OS installed.

Thanks Larry,

Sorry, I forgot to mention:-

Unfortunately, the BIOS on the ThinkPad 760XL is very basic.

And I mean VERY.

All that can be changed in the BIOS is the Date & Time and the Device Boot priority!!

Wow. The flexibility of this thing......

:0)

Thanks anyway.

Hi Simon

This link shows the procedure for supposedly enabling PCI Steering.

Thanks Krystyna,

Unfortunately, I've already tried that one but the next time I boot, Windows over rides my settings and says that to enable IRQ Steering on this computer's BIOS is known to cause problems.

But without enabling the steering, or being able to force an IRQ I can't do a thing with this network card!

Thanks anyway.

I'm told the only way to fix this problem is by using the "IBM Thinkpad Features Program."

Does any one know where/how to download this program? I surely don't have it on my 760ED.

Well Simon, I cleared mine up. what I did was upgrade to the latest BIOS, and also install the Thinkpad configuration Utility. Works fine now. Email me if you need more help.

I had the same problem with a dlink wireless card and my 760xl, install went okay, but got an x thru the power meter in the taskbar, called dlink to no avail, only suggestion was to reload os or update laptop bios. All I did was download the thinkpad configuration utility from ibm and then enabled irq thru pc card in the utilities tab, rebooted and my wireless worked!

I have exactly the same problem as described above.

I have downloaded and implemented the thinkpad utility.

I have downloaded the BIOS upgrade, created the service program diskette but for some reason I can't get the BIOS upgraded. I choose 'Y' for upgrade and restart the PC as described but nothing happens.

I'd really appreciate if anyone has any ideas as to why I can't get the BIOS upgraded“.

Thanks!

I have tried both the upgrade to the Bios, and also the Configuation Utility upgrade, and still not having any success. I have not been able to find the utility tab under the pc card and it is not there. Can anyone help with more specific versions of the Bios they are using and the version of the Configuation Utility.
I am trying to install a pcmcia card made by Buslink that is a self powered Usb 2.0.
Thanks
