Greetings,

I posted something similar to this question a few months back but was never really able to solve my problem. Here goes again.

A few months back I had to switch hard drives. Everything went smooth except now when Windows is booting up the Opening 'Microsoft Welcome Sound theme' comes through broken into two parts.

When I search for it and find it under C\Windows and play it, it plays perfectly. However, when I start up the computer, it comes through broken into two parts.

I realize this isn't an earthshaking problem, but does anyone know how I can transfer the 'good' version I find to replace the broken one on startup?

Thanks and Regards,

Phil

I wouldn't say the file is faulty. I'd far rather say there's something affecting it that loads exactly in the middle of when the sound's playing, or your CPU's under high load at the time.
Check startup list in MSCONFIG. Try pruning it if you can of unnecessary stuff. You could also try just re-ordering startup items in the appropriate places in the registry. Experiment a little.

jonajsil,

Thanks for imput. Thought I might be able to find some easy way to correct the problem. However, if I have to go jumping around in the registry, I guess I had better leave well-enough alone.

Thanks and Regards,

Phil

no need... can you use MSCONFIG? If not, learn how to use it. Then check all the Startup entries against these:

Remove all those unneccessary. That should help.

jonajsil,

Thanks for info on the site. I have to take the wife out right now. Will check it out when I get back.

Right now I only have five things showing and checked in my startup for MSConfig: (1) System Tray, (2) Cookie Wall, (3) Pointer, (4) AVG __CC and (5) Browser Web Check (loadwc.exe).

Thanks and Regards,

Phil

You can uncheck the loadwc.exe entry (5)

Hi Skip,jonajsil and all,

Unchecked 'loadwc.exe' as suggested, but opening sound is still distorted.

I also checked out your (Skip's) home page. Great piece of work. I will be checking it out more today after church.

Thanks for imput on my sound problem. I was just hoping there would be an easy way to transfer the working rendition (file copy) to the distorted one (booting up). An easy way that is that a "newbie" could handle ...lol

Regards,

Phil

Thank you Phil, I've only been coding html for 3~4 months and have a lot to learn. I spend some time each day working on it trying to make it easier to read and a little more interesting.

Have you tried playing independently, the version that is pointed to for playing on startup?

jonajsil,

Greetings! Yes, if I go and click directly on the Microsoft Sound file it plays perfectly. It just seems to hic-cup when it is being played on start-up.

I even went so far as to uninstall my MutiMedia files and reinstall them, but to no avail. It did nothing but open a 'can of worms'. I just finished squaring away that mess yesterday.

Everything seems to be back to normal now, except for the "hic-cupping" opening Microsoft Sound.

Thanks for your imput.

Regards,

Phil
