I am back again with that zone alarm file that refuses to be deleted. This file is an access denied in the windows/systems sector. I had sent an email to zone alarm and received an email, apparently their system crashed and had to resubmit this problem. I have be without my new computer for five days and was hoping someone could come up with other suggestions as to how I can delete this file. I tried going with a dos boot disk but it wouldn't delete. Another suggestion was to use the command prompt and delete it through it. I can't find the command prompt in the bootup phase. Hope there are some other ideas here,
thank you for your input and help,
charlie

If you can't delete the file(s) when in Dos, you are probably typing in the wrong command. Tell us the location and name(s) of the file(s) that you are trying to delete. Also tell us the command(s) you used and the error message(s) that you get.

Forgot to put this in:

Delete it from safe mode.
----------------
or in dos at the prompt...

del c:\foldername\ms-dos name

example= del c:\pictures\photo~.bmp

hit enter. To find the ms-dos name right click the file then select properties. It should show an ms-dos name.

Hi Dan and Deke,
I used c:\windows\system\del\vsdata95.vxd, I also used deltree\windows\system\vsdata95.vxd.
I also used *.vxd and vs*.vxd and v*.vxd. I have not tried it from the safe mode, that will be my next try,
thank again for your help,
charlie

Ok that's a problem!
It's not correct. I 'think' maybe it should be:
del c:\windows\system\vsdata95.vxd

Notice we never got a complete response from this:
"Tell us the location and name(s) of the file(s) that you are trying to delete. Also tell us the command(s) you used and the error message(s) that you get."
I wonder why we continue to help these people who give us no feedback or thanks!

OK, exit to dos. Sometimes windows won't let you change a file attribute. Exiting to dos leaves you in the windows directory. Type:

cd system

This puts you in the windows\system directory. Then:

attrib -r vsdata.vxd

This removes the read only attribute, letting you delete the file. Then:

del vsdata.vxd

This deletes the file. This assumes it is in the windows\system directory. Don't use

del *.vxd

as that will delete all the .vxd files in that directory.

Hi, If the file is in the Windows System folder, the command needed is DEL followed by a space then the file name spelt correctly

EG:
Exit from Windows, this should leave you in the Windows folder.

Type:
CD System[enter]

type:
attrib -r -s -h vsdata95.vxd[enter]

then type:
del vsdata95.vxd[enter]

If the spelling is correct, the file will be deleted

If this does not delete the file, PLEASE post back the error message you get in response.

Hi Chappie,
Tried Dave's -r, the computer rejected it, I forgot the wording. I will try your input of -r -s -h, I am hoping to tell you the computer is working. Thank you for your help and input,
charlie

Hello Dave and Chappie,
The error message I was get was - sharing violation reading drive c
abort, retry, fail.
I also posted on winMe side and was given - start- programs - accessories - system tools - click tools select sys cofig util and go down to the vxd and uncheck it.
This did not get me to ridding the file, but, slid the computer into the safe mode, where I deleted the file.
When I tried to access the net, the computer came back with -cannot find server-. I was wondering if you could suggest another step for me to take for my machine to access the net, again I appreciate your help and input, thanks,
charlie

I'm not familiar with zone alarm or if that file is necessary for other software functions. I did a google search on that file name and this looks like a good site to peruse:
