Comment:

my graphics card refuses to run Direct3D and when i test it using DXDIAG i get this error message:
Test Failed at step 8 (creating 3D device): HRESULT 0x80004005 (generic failure)
i really need help, i found a solution to the problem on microsof which involves updating some laplink program, which supposedly causes the errors however i do not have this program on my computer.

Did it ever pass the direct3D test?
What video card are you using?
What version of DirectX are you using?
Have you updated your video driver?

What video card are you using? if it isn't new it probably doesn't support DirectX9. A lot of people have trouble with ver9. The only way to revert back is to reinstall the OS. You could try useing Ver 8.1 which seems to be well field tested.

I had the exact same problem with those generic HRESULT errors. I first thought it might have been DX9, but it wasn't. Then I thought maybe its my system and reinstalled Windows ME. Same deal. Well and lastly I tried the opposite from what everyone says one should do, and got rid of the latest nvidia detonators (44.03) and reinstalled an older version (30.82) which is a known fix for an issue with Panzer General 3D. E voila, it helped here too, everything was fine again. Guess nvidia really crapped out with their latest drivers. Shame that I need them when I want to watch my AVIs on my TV. Guess I will be switching between drivers a lot from now on unless nvidia fixes their stuff.
