Good morning,

While killing time for my turn in the bathroom this morning to get ready for Sunday School and church I was exploring my files.

I noticed that under the Windows>Temporary Internet Files>Content Internet Explorer 5 listing there were four other entries;

They are:

09ij8py7
Nb6zed4f
Q9atuvwf
W1e7sxqn

All four of these folders were created May 28, 2004 at 9:20 p.m. within a few seconds of each other.

All four are identical in that each has the exact same thing as the TIF itself. I tried to trace it back by going to Start>Find>Files or Folders>Date Modified or Created Files on a certain date, but there is nothing listed for May 28, 2004 at all.

Are these four folders normal or can I safely delete them as excess baggage?

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Phil, To delete those alpha/numeric folders and their contents just open Intenet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/General tab, click the Delete Files button and when the pop-up window appears checkmark "delete all offline content" and click OK. They will be recreated again but all you have to do is repeat the above procedure to get rid of them.

Hi all,

In case any of you come back for another peek, here is another add-on to my original question.

Can I take it for granted that when I empty my TIF folder it will also delete the same items in the four 'numeric' folders listed in my original post?

Thanks and regards,

Phil

If you come back, I'm curious.

Yes, I accept that those folders are there but they are not normally visible from Windows Explorer (which only tells half the story).

The only way I can see them is to use winfile (File Manager) under:

c:\windows\tempor~1\content.ie5

Just wondered exactly how you spotted them?

Hi Bob and Derek.W,

I appreciate you both taking the time to come back and have a look-see.

Bob: Thanks Bob .. I just wanted to make sure my thinking was correct.

Derek.W: I just was exploring Explorer (no pun intended) and happened to click the + by TIF, then the + by Content IE5 and POW ... there they were. I just think I never paid any attention or didn't notice them before.

To the best of my knowledge (what little I have ...lol) I don't think I have changed any settings lately.

Right now I have Explorer set so I can see 'hidden' files because I was checking out my 'shelliconCache' folder.

Thanks and regards to you both,

Phil

My mistake Phil, I just didn't try quite hard enough. The four funny folders are quite visible in Windows Explorer (and are quite normal).

Hi Bryco and Derek.W,

Just got home from work and checked out the post.

Bryco: In your post do you mean that is how Win98 computers could see the four numeric folders (i.e., Folder Options, View)?

Derek.W: Your entitled to a mistake every now and then. But, you had better watch out. According to my count I am starting to close the gap. I have about 200+ mistakes to your one ...lol

Thanks and regards to you both,

Phil

Phil, yes that will allow them to be seen or should I say, not hidden any more (which they are by default).

Re: (i.e., Folder Options, View)?
I had an image there showing the correct settings in Folder Options, View screen but removed the image since. The 'alt' tag remains in the url but the image is off of my webspace so it only shows the alt tag being the text "Folder Options, View". Hope I didn't confuse anyone.

Regards,
Bryan

If you open the temporary internet files folder in explorer, all the cached TIF files will show in the right column. The files themselves are physically located in the randomly named folders you found in content.ie5. The cookies of course are stored in the windows\cookies folder. The TIF and cookie information that shows in the right column of explorer is stored in the index.dat file in content.ie5. At least that's what I've been able to figure out.

The TIF folders are created 4 at a time with 8 random alphanumeric characters. So they'll be 4, 8, 12, etc. of them. The folders will be recreated if you delete them in dos but with different names.

Morning Bryco and DAVEINCAPS,

I appreciate you both returning and sharing your thoughts.

Bryco: Thanks for the explanation of your post. All I got was a small red 'x' with the words 'Folder Options, View'. As far as possibly confusing anyone, remember that I am confused as soon as I sit down in front of a computer ...lol

DAVEINCAPS: Thanks for explaining in more detail the creation and workings of the numeric folders I had mentioned. Your thoughts, along with those of all the other talented people on this forum, are always much appreciated.

Thanks and regards to you both,

Phil
