tcp/ip violation and icmp echo request(ping)

i have just had a warning on ie5 that someone has accesed my tcp/ip address and now my firewall is telling me that i am being pinged from 172.162.63.192 ??????
i realise that this is someones ip address
what does ping do ? is it a problem and how can i avoid someone getting this info again??
any help would be appreciated

ive had seven ping requests in about 20 mins
all from different ip`s my firewall says im safe because it did not respond to this request but ive never had this sort of problem before this violation
