I've setup TCP/IP ona computer but I can't ping anything, not even the computer itself. I try to do a winipcfg and it returns an error message "Fatal Error. Could not read IP configuration." What's up with this? How do I fix it?

Its just a try, but a good try. Go to Control panel, Network, and delete all, TCP/IP, IPX/SPX if you have etc. After reinstall TCP/IP etc.

And install Client for microsoft networks, so there is a network interface to ping from.

I have unistalled all of the network components and then restarted the computer and reinstalled them but that didn't work either. Also I checked and DNS is already disabled so that's not it either. Thanks for the suggestions though. Anymore?

Your browser install is hosed, then. Bummer,eh? uninstall it and try again. Or simply shoot the computer (works for me).

Cyber-Hick,

Go into the system information program that resides at Start Programs Accessories. Go to Hardware and then click on Network. In it you should see a listing of all your network adapters and, if you scroll down, the protocols installed. If there is a problem with them it will have a message annotated in red next to it. The message I believe will say something like "unable to initialize".

Anyway, if you see this, then it is a driver problem. The only way I was able to fix this problem in my system (using Dlink 528CT NICS) was to reinstall a driver that windows 98 likes to assign to my card (RealTech 8029(AS) and go from there. Once I did that, everything worked fine. I then was able to go back and update the drivers to the proper ones provided with the card.

Give this a shot first don't uninstall any programs. Doofus, why did you suggest that? Nowhere in his message did he reference the Browser. I could understand it if he could access the network but got errors trying to browse, but he isn't even trying to do that.

Regards,

Fox

Go to START/settings/control panel/system. Select the Device Manager tab and see if the network adapter driver is working.

If it isn't working, it will have an exclamation point(!) In this case you can remove it, then reboot and allow Win95 to detect it (you may need the floppy that came with your netcard if the driver is not with Win95.)

If the netcard driver is working (no exclamation point) then your TCP/IP drivers may be corrupt To be sure, do PING 127.0.0.1 from a DOS prompt. If you get an error, then it is indeed TCP/IP that's the problem. Try reinstalling Win95 without formatting your HD. If this doesn't work, you may have to bite the bullet and format you hard drive, then do a clean reinstall (unfortunate but it should work.)

If you get a valid replies from PING 127.0.0.1, then TCP/IP is loading properly and isn't the source of the problem.

Hope this helps.

For those who are interested:

To fix this problem I had a problem with winsock2. Something got corrupted. What you do is this. Reboot the Pc to a dos prompt. Change to the directory c:windows\ws2bakup. Then execute the ws2bakup.bat. This does alot of coping and removing of files. Then reboot the Pc and it's fixed. I actually had to call micosoft on this one(Ick). Thanks for everyones help.

I've Windows 98. Don't know anything about Tcp part but I got msg in IP Configuration window saying, "Fatal Error, Cannot read IP configuration." Rec'd the msg after I went on PACBELL ISP. Connected just fine but couldn't not get the browsers started, IE or NETSCAPE because of this msg.

PACBELL says it's a Windows 98 problem and can't help me. I hope you can.

thank you, cyamamoto@bigfoot.com
