Hi,
Can anyone tell me what does taskmon.exe do?
Win98 automatically load this program during startup, I feel like disabling this, is it safe to to disable it?

Taskmon (task monitor), usually referred to by it's Win 3x name: Task Manager, is the box that comes up when you ctl+alt+del. For goodness sake, don't disable it.

Howdy, Why can't you disable it? Its annoying to me and I removed it from the registry as well. My opinion, which is little, I say kill it and let it die. Nothing personal Doofus, just speaking my mind.
Laters,
Kevin The Tech Dude.

Well, I suppose I see your point. However I do find it handy when I lockup but still have keyboard access, or when I want to close all programs in the background.

Howdy, Ya still don't need the file, I can do a ctrl-alt-del if I choose to bring up the close dialog box, the file taskmon is still in the c:\windows directory I just don't load it at startup to waste memory.
Laters,

I'm just guessing, but if you can still do a ctrl-alt-del when taskmon is disabled, might it not be the do dah that collects the info about program and file usage that defrag uses to "inteligently" sort files onto your HDD?

If you get Wintop from the Win95 kernel toys, you can end processes from there much like in NT. You can run it from the Run dialog or a shortcut so it only runs when you want. Unfortunately, system services are off limits.
Get kernel toys at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/wutoys/w95kerneltoy/?RLD=312Or just Wintop at this site:
http://newlife-win98.server101.com/wintop_info.htmIt says it is only for Win95, but Wintop runs just fine in 98. It is a self -extracting exe. Just extract the files and copy the Wintop stuff to wherever you want it. I placed it somewhere in my path so I just type wintop at the run dialog.

Taskmon.exe is not the "Task Monitor" of Windows NT fame--it is the scheduler utility that sits in your task bar. Don't believe me? Backup your CurrentVersion\Run registry key, then delete it and restart--what icon disappears from your task tray?

And remember: it's not helpful to help when you don't know what you're talking about.

Hello .
In response to the correct Bob, and the crappy Nardo . Bob was right. See the site and it will answer all the questions I had as well about Taskmon, its functions, and a lot more technical based crap you could learn. For once it was actually a nice guy with info and not a sonofabitch with a spam site. So, check yor ass before you yell. Buttchop.
Thank you sir Bob for answering for the rest of loZers.

http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/pctech/content/17/14/tf1714.003.html This helped me understand. I had to disable taskmon after msconfig showed this to cause my explorer kernell32.dll error.

thanks for the info Bob.. very helpful. That site has TONS of great and useful information. not everyone on the net is evil :)

I lost the Taskmon.exe scheduler icon from my taskbar after a bad download from the web.
how do I get it back? is it still working if it isn't in the taskbar? I'm clueless on this so please--don't give me incorrect info--Thanks

Hi,
I'm no expert so you may wish to wait for another :), but I think you can go to "Start/RUN" type "msconfig", there should be a box to check so you can get it back ;).
Good Luck

I too had the same problem as Clark. TASKMON.exe is causing an error message on startup. The error is Explorer to cause my explorer.exe kernell32.dll error.
Any suggestions short of reinstalling Win98? I have already tried to extract/restore versions of TASKMON.exe and VIOLOG.VXD

taskmon.exe is actually a task monitor which is used by Windows to help decide on how to prioritize how your files are optimized during defragmentation. It does this by loggin ALL activity on all applications in a directory called APPLOG.
I was recently on this problem for days of reinstalling and rebooting (and even upgrading to WME from 98se) until I finally discovered it was a corrupt file in the APPLOG directory -- taskmon was trying to open it every time it started and the act of opening the corrupt file caused the bomb.
Solution: rename APPLOG directory to something like APPLOG_OLD and reboot. This will cause taskmon to reconstruct the directory and circumvent the corrupt file. It shouldn't hurt anything to do this since these files just keep track of how often certain apps are used. The usefulness of these logs build up after about a week of typical use.
this link helped me with this
http://www.computercraft.com/messageboard/messages/1026.htmlThere are also articles on taskmon in MS KB

I'm just guessing, but if you can still do a ctrl-alt-del when taskmon is disabled, might it not be the do dah that collects the info about program and file usage that defrag uses to "inteligently" sort files onto your HDD?
awiza2000....

I tried finding the applog folder but there was not one. So the I tried to restore the taskmon.exe file from the '98 CD. That made no difference either. I then disabled the Task scheduler and lo and behold the problem was gone. I dont know if maybe I did something else inadvertantly but the problem is solved and I am happy.
BTW: Here is the official desciption of what Taskmon.exe actually doesWindows 98 has Taskmon.exe, a small, continuously running program that hooks CreateProcess. When Taskmon detects a process being started, it checks the registry to see if the application has already been optimized. If not, Taskmon loads Fiolog .vxd, which performs the disk trace (even catching reads from cache) and writes out a log file to the hidden folder %windir%\applog. Fiolog.vxd unloads automatically after 10 minutes with no activity. The next time the Defrag utility is run, the application's clusters are automatically optimized. Under optimum conditions (that is, on a disk with 4K clusters), this reordering can cut an application's load time by more than half. The only caveat is that the logging process itself can slow the launch process by about 7 percent the first time an application is launched. Subsequent launches show no measurable impact.
