As far as I know there is no setting for this, they just work that way as part of Windows.
If this suddenly happened recently it might be worth restarting in MS-DOS and typing scanreg /restore (hit Return key). Chose a date/time before the problem came along.

There should be a way to restore the show desktop icon. It probably involves a registry hack.
The Windows key in combination with the M key will do the same job.

I'm not sure that the 'Show Desktop' icon is involved, but sure, there's a way to recreate if missing.
Anyhow - one thing to try, TweakUI's 'Repair System Files' if the scanreg /restore tactic doesn't help

Try moving your cursor to the bottom of the screen. If the taskbar then shows, right click it, select properties, and untick auto hide, and apply.

Another way:
Start button/Taskbar & Start Menu
Untick Auto hide
(hadn't thought of that possibility - nice one OtheHill)

Ooops, Sorry but the task bar hiding was the culprit. Thanks loads both Otherhill and Derek and all that offered help.
