Or--just do the Print screen and put into Paint and save as a jpeg right there. If you don't have the jpg option, go into MS Knowledge base and it shows how to add it. Couple of examples: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q193354

I actually like irfanview (www.irfanview.com). Ot´s very small (about 364kb), and completely free, since it started as an university-project. Besides screenshots it handles nearly every Image/movie or audiofiles and can small imageeffects.

The Print Screen key (and Alt Print Screen) will do what you want, as suggested.
If you want the facility to capture any old portion of your screen (even overlapping Windows) then I suggest MWSnap. It will do many formats and even .bmp & .jpg at the same time if you want.
Many of the Screen Capture programs I tested had minor hang-ups when you tested them thoroughly (it's a long story) but MWSnap was fine. It is on the list at this URL:
