Interesting. As you probably already know the system tray is that containing the icons just to the left of the clock. I would have expected these icons to vanish if you unchecked systray.exe in msconfig and re-booted.
It tried it and yet the few I have still arrived as usual. I am now similarly mystified so await further responses - hopefully taking this observation on board at the same time.

Well from what I just experimneted with.........I disabled it in msconfig but i still left only one application for my sound card to run at start up.........so now that I have rebooted and everything the application for my sound card is still running and "systray" is disabled.I guess if you stop everything from running and then disable the system tray that's when it will vanish.......as you said I'll wait for more responses.....thanx for your help.

Here is a pretty good defition:
SYSTRAY.EXE - System Tray Services. Provides the Volume Control, PC Card Status and Power Management icons that reside in the System Tray. SYSTRAY.exe may be disabled if none of these services are required. It will launch as and when required if you later enable the icons. If you need these items they're available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel

Thanks for the info. I use none of the mentioned features so that's another one I can uncheck in msconfig.
