Good evening,

I was exploring 'Startup Inspector for Windows' that I recently installed and one of the programs it found running at startup was 'Systray.exe'.

I knew this already because it always shows up in my MSConfig startup folder too.

However, Startup Inspector said this file didn't even exist. Its summary of the program read:

" ....SystemTray
Filename SysTray.exe
Warning: This file does not exists.
Params
Required User's choice
Startup Location LM Run
Memory Usage N/A (unable to retrieve program memory status.)
Peak Memory Usage N/A (unable to retrieve program memory status.)
Comments SYSTRAY.exe - System Tray Services. Provides the Volume Control, PC Card Status, Power Management and other icons that reside in the System Tray (see here). SYSTRAY.exe may be disabled if none of these services are required. It will launch as and when required if you later enable the icons. If you need these items they're available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel ...."

Systray.exe shows up on my computer at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. So why is 'Startup Inspector' telling me it doesn't exist?

Any further information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

The only thing I can think of is that there is a bug with 'Startup Inspector for Windows' or that it didn't install correctly. Unless this is another of those W95 compatibility problems you've discussed in the past.

What the program says in Comments is pretty well correct and on my W98SE the location of the file is exactly where you said.

Err...well, my W98SE also has a copy in two other places but I doubt this has any bearing on your issue:

c:\windows\options\cabs (not important)

c:\windows\vcm (DirectX folder)

Hi Derek.W,

Yes, probably has something to do with me running Win95. The program (Startup Inspector) says it is for Win98 and up. But, you know me, I try anything within reason that I can get my hands on with this 'old warhorse'...lol

I appreciate you taking the time to post. Hope all is well with your daughter and family in the Far East. They have been in my prayers.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

You've become a master at forcing W98 proggies onto W95 so I'll just hope you'll manage it once again (if that's the problem).

Fam in a safer place but I'll obviously feel a lot happier when they get home. Timescale obviously unpredictable. Thx for thoughts, appreciated.

Hi Derek.W,

Glad to hear the family is safe. I know what you mean when you say you will be happier when they are back home again.

As for me being a 'master' of putting Win98 programs on Win95 ... not hardly ....lol

My wife says I just like seeing the 'fatal exception screens' ...lol

Take care and I hope all continues to go well for the family.

Talk to you later ...

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Nothing to do with this post, but just making sure you hadn't missed out on this website:

GOLDEN OLDIES (W95, IE's etc)

Fam now at Bangkok so much safer - awaiting their flight back.

Hi Derek.W,

Thanks for the link. 'Lightspeed' is where I found the older version of Zone Alarm which would run on my Win95a.

You are correct when you say it is packed full of 'Golden Oldies'. I visit it regularly.

I appreciate the update on your family. I hope the time soon comes when you can reach out and hold them.

Thanks and regards,

Phil
