I deleted some files when on clean up my hard drive. Then when I restarted my computer, it said "can't find system.ini, have to run windows setup to install it again. and press any key to continue". My problem here is I don't have bootup disk, I don't have Window 98 install CDs.Simply, I have nothing. WHat should I do? please help me to fix this old cheapy computer.

You have a serious problem Chrisy! System.ini is unique for each installation. The only thing I can suggest is finding someone with a Win98 CD to borrow.

i am purely guessing here, but i believe you actually are missing a program that has an "entry" that is supposed to be in your system.ini. A common cause of this type is usually trying to delete something while it is running.. (antivirus is very common) if you could give EXACT error you are seeing it would be more helpful, if it IS your actual sys.ini someone else here i am sure could help. Post exact error. Speedy

the exactly problem is I cannot load windows 98. Right after loading the screen of DOS check up, the computer turned back the message: "can't find the system.ini, run window setup again, click any key to continue". Problem is after clicking any key, the computer turn blk, no desktop, no nothing. and you restart the computer, same thing happen again. It's a dead cycle. Come'on, help. I need to get this fix. Thanks.

If the PC previously worked OK (like yesterday), boot up to a Command prompt and enter Scanreg/Restore and choose yesterdays date
This restores yesterdays registry, win.ini and system.ini

While booting, hold the ctrl key
You will eventually get a "menu". Choose Command Prompt

Interesting that the MS URL pointed out by Gene makes no comment about system.ini and win.ini being restored.

Hi All,
Here is the link to what is backed up by scanreg which as WhitPhil stated includes the system.ini and the win.ini along with the registry files user.dat and system.dat files.
