When i start my windows 95, After everything's loading, a message says that my system.ini file is corrupted and i need to reinstall...(I do not have anything to reinstall it.) It also says that ???.vxd if screwed up. I press enter and another one comes up with a different ???.vxd file. After a couple of these messages it turns my computer off. I can use my Dos still. What are .vxd? how can i fix this? and where are they called up in the system.ini file?

thanks,

Mike B.

.VXDs are drivers and they are called up by .drv and .dll lines in the [boot], [drivers],[drivers32],[mci] blocks and by memory address in the [386enh] block. You've got a real mess on your hands. Reinstalling Win '95 is about your only way out.

Actually, you could try something first...

1) In DOS, change to the c:\windows directory. Rename system.ini to system.old. Copy the file system.cb to system.ini. Be sure to use copy and not rename on this file, as this is the file SafeMode uses as a system.ini file.
2) Edit the system.ini. Add the lines "drivers=mmsystem.dll" and "mouse.drv=mouse.drv" (without the quotes) to the [boot] section. Add the line "mouse=*vmouse" to the [386Enh] section (or create the heading if it doesn't exist and then add the line). Save the file and restart. This is all Win95 needs for a system.ini to boot normally.
3) If it starts up normally, then you've got a problem with the system.ini. The file is dynamically written to. That is, if you change your display resolution, a line for your display driver (its vxd file) will be written to the system.ini by the OS. You may have to reinstall some apps (like multimedia components).
4) If Win95 still doesn't boot normally after step 2, then Doofus is probably right, you need a reinstall. Are you sure it didn't say your system registry was corrupt?
