I have a problem with my old Compaq Presario 4704 running win 95. I am having problems because my system will not boot up and will not even let me get to a command prompt. If I let it boot on it's own it says "missing operating system." I have tried rebboting with an emergency boot disk, win95 boot disk, maxtor powermax and maxplus and it will not bbot with any of them. It reads the floppy and when it goes to the hard drive it just stops cold. HELP!!!!

It could be that the HDD died.

Is the drive detecting under the BIOS?....use your boot disk, run fdisk and see if the partitions there as it sounds like the drive has lost it's partition. In which case format it and re-install windows...

If, after doing what is mentioned above, you still have this error...

you are missing the boot sector-

find SYS.COM
make sure it is on the boot floppy...
Make sure sys.com is the SAME version of windows you are installing...

Boot off the floppy disk to a command prompt,
type "sys c:" and press Enter...
you will see system transfered...

Take the floppy out and reboot...
