back when i had windows 98 SE on my old computer, it kept downloading spyware automatically, and at the time i did not know about the anti-spyware programs out..anyways a program called system soap came up 1 day, so i Un-installed it from - Add, Remove Programs, and then the next time i booted up, i logged in, and nothing came up, it was a blank screen, with just my wallpaper and mouse pointer, no programs/toolbar, nadda, now this happend a couple years ago, but i would like to know if there is a possibility i could get all my original files back from that computer such as music files/picture files/ movie files/ game files? if anyone has any info, PLEASE reply on this forum,or email me! - thanks. - Aaron.A

Are you able to boot to safe mode? F8
You could try this,
Reboot the computer to Safe Mode (Press F8 when Windows starts).Click Start > Run, type 'regedit' to open the Registry Editor.
Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run
In the right pane, delete the value named 'System Soap Pro' that points to the file 'soap.exe'.
Exit Registry Editor.
Open Windows Explorer, delete the folder 'System Soap Pro' from 'C:\Program Files' directory.
Reboot the computer.
Also download and run Ewido Anti-Malware

You may also try this program to recover the lost files ,

A good thing to do is a Registry and system files restore. This can be done by booting to Dos Standalone and typing:
scanreg /restore
Restore to a date before the problem.
However, do not do that right away. It will not restore the other files (music, movie, game, etc). You will need a file recovery program for that. Do not use the system until you are ready to try that. Any use of the system reduces the chance of recovery.

thank you guys, i really appreciate it, i like how i did not have to wait a week sometimes even a month for a reply on other forums..yes i will try that solution bob, thanks again! - Aaron.A

Follow these removal steps to remove this adware (system soap) from your computer:
1. Reboot the computer to Safe Mode (Press F8 when Windows starts).
2. Click Start > Run, type 'regedit' to open the Registry Editor.
3. Navigate to the following registry key:
4. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run
5. In the right pane, delete the value named 'System Soap Pro' that points to the file 'soap.exe'.
6. Exit Registry Editor.
7. Open Windows Explorer, delete the folder 'System Soap Pro' from 'C:\Program Files' directory.
8. Reboot the computer.

BTW, it does not appear that your OS has been wiped out. If it was, you wouldn't be able to boot up, log in, & view a screen with "just my wallpaper and mouse pointer". The OS is still there, it's just mucked up.
"now this happend a couple years ago..."
So this computer has just been sitting for a couple years & you never attempted to fix it or retrieve your files? Did you try booting from a boot floppy, then checking what files are on the HDD thru DOS? Did you try an "over the top" install of Win98?

It thought it was ctrl or shift on windows 98SE as it was the odd one out fopr accessing safe mode. Some system could ahve been f8 but normally it's one of the two i stated. :P

Tapping F8 to get to the Startup Menu works fine on ALL W98SE machines. From there you can select
Safe Mode. The same holds true for all variants of
W95 & W98.SOME machines will "also" accept you holding Ctrl whilst booting but NOT ALL. Ctrl worked on mine until I changed the mobo.

Tapping F8 during bootup will bring up the menu, then you can select Safe Mode from that menu. You may be able to get directly into safe mode by tapping F5.

Yes, I tend to forget that F5 option but maybe because my machine won't accept it. All I get is a blank screen with an egg timer and the machine clatters away forever.
As you say, F5 might work. F8 always does.

Or you can just slave the drive in another computer and copy everything you want.
Just make sure the computer your slaving the drive in has a good antivirus.
then experiment away with other suggestions.
