I think I have finally solved the annoying problem of RAM limit in win98 but one thing still bugs me: the system resources.

I do have many softwares that I want to be running as I work, like Babylon, Goback etc.

Actually I currently have 15 icons in systemtray. The performance tab in My computer says: 6% free - too low. But I WANT these softwares to be easily at reach. That's why I bought 512 MB of RAM. Now, what in the world do I have to do next to solve this problem? Move to windows 2000? Apparentely, Win xp did not show this problem but it was a bit sluggish due to its size...

If you go to start > run and type in 'msconfig', then click on the startup tab, you can stop some of these programs automatically loading when you boot. You can still use them when you want but they won't have to start everytime you switch on the pc.
Just make sure they really are things you don't want to start up though. If MS FastFind is there, uncheck it. It can hog resources bad.

If you want the software "easy to reach" either load them to the Quicklaunch bar or, the easiest way is to drop them on the desktop, then use the Show Desktop icon in the QL area to get to the desktop quickly.
Having them in the Systray means all of these applications are actually running.
If you really need them to be all active, you have to move to an NT based OS that will not have the resources issue.

You have to realize that you can do nothing to increase 'System Resources' in Win98. The ONLY way to do it is to reduce the number of applications running. Moving to Win2K or WinXP is the other option. Those systems can dynamically increase System Resources.

You bought 512 Mb RAM- waste of money. So-called System Resources have nothing whatever to do with RAM. Read this line again. System resources are limited by a stupid Microsoft design.

System Resources-

There is a free program named `Wintop' (Windows Process Watcher) which will show what programs
are in your startup function, what programs are running, and what percentage of
your systems resources are being used. It is continuously updated. You can keep it on your desktop,
or keep it minimized in the taskbar. It is interesting to see that an animated web ad can
tie up 30 % of your systems resources! It is part of the Microsoft Windows95 Kernel Toys.
Although the article says win95 only, it seems to work ok on win98. Click below to download:

KernelToys

You may or may not have any use for the rest of the programs in the 'Kernel Toy' package.

After you download it, here is a site which explains in detail what 'Wintop' does:
