hi folks,
please help!
i couldn't boot on Normal mode only in Safe Mode.It will restart in Normal Mode.
Then I look on the performance tab in my in my System Properties i look in white box (the select an item, and then click details for more information). in that box i got 2 problems the first one says:1.Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance. when i click on details it said
Windows 98 Second Edition was unable to identify a real-mode driver or memory-resident program loaded in your Config.sys or Autoexec.bat file. You will see another message that lists the name of the driver or program causing the problem.
Because Windows 98 Secind Edition could not identify the driver or program, it has switched to MS-DOS compatibility mode to ensure the program will run. However, this decreases overall performance. To improve performance, remove the program or driver causing the problem, or contact its manufacturer for an upgraded version.
the second one says:2. Drive A is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system. when i click on details it saidDrive C is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
This problem often occurs on more than one drive. Usually it is caused by a driver listed in the Config.sys file that Windows Millennium Edition does not recognize and that is related to the message Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance. If you see both messages, see the Help for the Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance message first.
If you only see the message Drive X is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system on one drive, that drive is using an MS-DOS compatibility (real-mode) driver, which might reduce that drive’s performance. Contact your hardware manufacturer to see if an updated driver is available for your drive. If not, the drive’s performance might be less than optimal, but you can still use it.the wierd thing is i dont see my d drive(cd burner) anymore. i tried systemworks 2001 to fix the problem but it found nothing. i even went to pcpitshop to do a test and it said it couldnt find my d drive.
thanks 4 any help

your computers registry sounds like it is almost copmletely bust. You have tried to delay your copmuters life as long as possible it sounds by installing fixes and tweaks but now is the time to backup all the files you want to keep and do a complete hard disk format from booted up dos and a clean full install of 98/Me. You may find a way to re-install the drivers that are corrupt but the best thing for your pc now is a complete clean re-install it will probably make your copmuter run about 10x faster. Thats wat I recomend

Post back contents of config.sys and maybe we can identify the line causing compatibility mode.
It shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Joel:
I may try your suggestions hope it can solve my problem.do i need to reformat or reinstall first?
DAVEINCAPS:my config.sys is empty.Note:Modem and Printer are the only devices attached to my PC.
thanks again!

i have the same problem om win me. i
had it before and it fixed itself at some
point. now it's doing it again on a fresh
install.
the problem only occurs on a cold boot. if
i want to see my cd drive i have to restart.
my workaround is to push the reset
button just seconds after power-on
(which makes me think that the problem
may not be with drivers). i'd appreciate
any help on this.

Hi all , I am facing the same problem
( Drive C is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system. when i click on details it saidDrive C is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system. )
based on your suggestion I reinstalled the Operating System ( I tried both ME and 98Se) , but this does't solved my Problem.
Please help me in solving the above problem. Thanks all.
