Bought a game for my daughter (some Barbie game) which required a 3d 8MB graphics card. I purchased an Apollo(?) 2D/3D 8MB w/ TV-OUT S3 Savage IX card (model ASVGB1N-8M). Installed drivers that came with it. Ran the game, and it hung, everything locked up. Reboot, try reading the readme files in Notepad, and after scrolling a little, it hangs. Removed 3D card and put the old video (Matrox) card back in and can open readme in notepad no problem. Are there any updated drivers for this card or any known issues? Tried searching driverguide.com and couldn't find anything specific to this particular card.

Do I just need to purchase a different card?

Any recommendations on a good/cheap card if I can't fix the problem with this one?

Thanks

Have you tried to see if the game will work on your current Matrox card? If it doesn't then you should have purchased it. You got a new card anyway. OK, I have found a GeForce video card that's under $50. I would think that it would play the game.

Are you sure that the new card doesn't work? I don't want you to spend more money if not necessary.

Kevin.

As Mike says, you may have to update Windows to DirectX 8.1.

Sorry didn't mention it, but yes I installed DirectX 8.1. It came with the video card.

The game won't work with my Matrox card because it is not a 3d card. Game requires 3D card.

As far as the BIOS settings go, what do I need to do there?

Thanks for the help.

Did you uninstall the Matrox card and its drivers. You sometimes get conflicts if this isn`t done.

Well, I downloaded a BIOS upgrade from DELL for this machine. It was Phoenix BIOS A08. It upgraded to A09. Went into BIOS setup and set it to use AGP. I also alternated setting the memory to 64 and 256. Neither helped.

Don't know what else to do.

It is a Dell Dimension XPS D300 if that helps.

Thanks
