Comment:

System File Checker says user.exe may be corrupted.

What does user.exe control?

What might I gain and/or lose if I repair it?

Thanks to all the GREAT! posters on this board

Leave it alone if all is working - SFC frequently claims that file (among others) is corrupt. 'Repairing' may cause grief.

it is even worse: if you choose sfc to replace user.exe, it takes the wrong one (there are two files called user.exe in the windows cab files) and causes your computer to refuse booting anymore

Can't say I quite agree with your NEVER, I've often found it very useful.

The important thing is to understand where it can go wrong (hence my link) and to always use the option to save the file it is overwriting.

I've used it to drag files out of IE download cabs and all sorts of other things. The log is handy if you run it after a program install, in case you need to know later what files have been changed.

You can always ask it to simply Update the table rather than change the file. Once you have it tamed it can tell you a lot about what has been going on.

For anyone who is unsure I do accept that it is best left alone.

Yeah - I just used it a few hours back, and the sky hasn't fallen yet.

Like any tool that can replace System Files, a certain level of caution & understanding is required. If you do use it, you need to be familiar with its quirks & limitations.

Keeping the SFC database current doesn't hurt either, and, there are backup options in the 'settings' section.
