System file checker isn't the thing you can rely on. Sometimes it creates problems instead of solving them. One example: sfc once 'found out' user.exe was bad. SFC reinstalled it, but took the wrong user.exe (there are two versions in the win98 cab files). Result: no more windows98. Manually putting the original one back restored my system. There was nothing wrong with it.

As a second to the reponse by ruudtes, SFC had issues with IE5.0 to 5.5 where it would give incorrect missing or corrupted file messages that did not exist. I don't know how well it is working with IE6 as I do not rely on it. If my Scan Disk reveals no problems and I am not getting error messages I leave it alone.

I agree with the above, but if you do decide to use it, you will need the win98 CD.

Hi all,

I think Mesich is thinking about the same thing as I am.

THE WAY to solve a spool32 error is to upgrade spoolss.dll ie for Windows 98SE, you have to take the Windows-Me version.

So, I think someone changed your spoolss.dll in order to avoid spool32 error.
Bernie, could you tell us which version is your spoolss.dll (right click on the file and chose the 'Version' tab). If it says 4.90.3000, then you've got the Win-Me so, keep it and don't obey SFC!

You're welcome mesich,

These links were given 2 times on this forum recently!

Years ago, I was meeting this Spool32 problem rather often (Ws9x and local printers) and never managed to find a solution!

I went to HP, to MS, etc. I found 36 clues but nothing sure.

Till recently, I was giving your links as the best ones I ever saw -> 116544

Recently, someone gave a link HP forums and that's THE SOLUTION!

Well, the French one is coming... July 14th! (not exactly Independence Day but 1789 Revolution celebration)

Hello,
Well I replaced the spoolss.dll file with the Win-ME version. I can print just great when I download pdf files from the internet, but still get the spool32 error after printing some pdf files I have saved on my harddrive.

Its better, but not perfect. Guess nothing is. Have a great day ! and Thanks

Hi Bernie, hi all,

I'm so disappointed the spoolss.dll didn't solve your problem!

Very strange! there might be numerous different cases about that spool32 error... about 3 years ago, I had that problem in my company but it has now disappeared!
As far as I understood, in my case, it was due to local printers in Windows 9x and mainly in Windows 95 (we don't have these configurations any more).

I had searched solutions for years and found many various clues: uninstall MS-Office, reinstall Windows, it's a virus (this clue several times on this forum), delete all unused local printers (from HP), etc. HP staff doesn't know better!

Try to follow Mesich's links (response #7) ie MS' and HP's suggestions!
Try to go onto HP forums (the links I gave in response #8): you'll read there many members of the forums stating spoolss.dll replacement is the only solution!

Good luck,

Gérard from Paris, France
