Howdy, i'm a very non-technical computer user. My pc seems to be booting and operating fine. However, I was doing the routine maintenance that i know to do, including running Windows 98 SE system file checker. It told me that i have two files possibly corrupt - user.exe and setupx.dll However, I have a computer with an OEM, preinstalled version of Windows, so i don't have a clue how to get the files i need short of using the recovery cd provided with my pc. That will completely reformat my harddrive. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any alternatives. Everywhere I've looked so far just recommends extracting the files from the Windows CD or disks, neither of which i have.

Thanks in advance
Elle

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! (Since it works OK, I'd ignore the alleged problem.)

If you want to restore the files, point to:

c:\windows\options\cabs

and the files you need are there.

SFC has trouble with those 2 files and frequently reports them as corrupted.
DO NOT restore user.exe from the Win CD, as SFC will choose an incorrect file.

As rac indicates, there is no action that needs to be taken.

Elle, rack and Whitphil are very much on target depending on what version of IE you are using. SFC gives out incorrect info about missing files, and corrupted files that is false. I wish I could remember the Micrsoft article on this one, but they (MS) knows there is a problem and as usual are slow to correct it. If the repair worked count yourself as lucky. Good to do the maintenance but SFC is one to omit for now.
