Hi.
I had to re-install my windows 98.
I don't have an upgrade version of 98, so
instead of formating and re-installing everything,
I deleted my windows directory. This seems to have worked fine. I was then able to re-install windows 98. (of course the links are now gone, but that part is easy.) All of my drivers re-loaded fine. I have a pci modem that will not 'auto detect' and install. But I also have a PCI Serial Controller driver that windows found on boot up. Windows wanted to 'search for driver' blah blah blah. Now I have the cd-rom that came with my modem, and I have the windows 98 cd-rom. But no matter where it searches, or what directory I specify, it still won't find this PCI Serial Controller driver. I looked in the Windows\system direc. and found the serialui.dll, serial.vxd, pci.vxd, pcimp.pci, drivers, but apparently these are not the ones it wants. Does anyone have any ideas ??
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
TIA
JAS

Yo, I know your problem, does jour computer stucks after 5 minutes using???
I HATE INSTALLING WIN 98 AFTER WIN95!!!!

Had the same problem, and spent all afternoon figuring it out. I have a Diamond Supramax v90 modem. I downloaded the latest drivers from http://www.diamondmm.com then followed the instructions at:
http://www.epox.com/support/general/faq-38.html
Now my modem works again.
This might be the solution for other PCI Serial Controller problems. The Microsoft support site was useless to solve this.

Me too, Why does this thing work after a yr and then die? Microsoft site was no help iether, the only thing I found of relavence is message boards promising drivers. Although I may have narrowed it down to my modem(?) as the cross over controller, still can't find anything like a driver. Anyone help!

Trust me, I'm not a huge fan of Micro$oft, but their site does at least address it. Check out http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q221/8/39.ASP?LNG=ENG&SA=ALLKB
Apparently Windows 98 doesn't include PCI Serial Controller drivers. Nice going, Bill. I'm trying to make mine work, and I'll let you know if it does.

Same with me, i have been told though if you go to your modem home site address {mines rockwell) they run you through the problem., Wish me luck

check this out kids...( I had the same prob but found this on the net)...
" It seems to be related to the Rockwell 56k Kflex\v90 PCI chipset. I went to http://www.modulartech.com/modem.htm and downloaded the following file: hcfv135.zip. after unziping it, I went to control panel \ system \ device manager, Selected the PCI serial controler found under other devices, then selected update driver - pointed it at the driver and It worked..... By the way, my modem is a Hayes 56..... So the driver seems to be a universal. "
Hope that helps. I'm gonna try it on my PC (I'm on a college PC at the moment cause my Modem is fucked due to Bill's little 'oversight')
Tim.

All the drivers I tried failed working. Except one. Go see my homepage for more information:

Good luck.

So, uhhh..., like, did anyone find a solution to this problem yet or what??? Please repost CLEAR instructions. Thanks, now...

i went to compaq's web site and looked up the model number. I downloaded the modem softpaq files from there website. it turns out that the PCI serial controller is actually the Modem Enumerator

THIS IS THE SOULITION!!!!!
1. When win98 boots and says it found the PCI serial adapter start the hardware wizzard.
2. Select the potion "no. I want to select my hardware from a list" and hit next
3. Go down the list and select Modem and hit next
4. this will bring up 2 windows, the one on the left has manufacturers the one on the right has model types. Unser the model type window there is a "have disk button, hit it.
5. This brings up the "install from disk" window. Hit the browse button.
6. Find where your modem's install files are located. (if they are on a CD and it is your d:\ drive select d:\)It is looking for an .INF file. When you select a location if an INF file is present its name will show up in the window on the left. Highlight it and hit OK. then hit OK again.
7. This will bring up that same Manufacturers/models window. Select your Manufacturer on the left and select your modem's model on the right. Then hit next.
8. this should load the drivers for the modem.in short, Windows "sees" the modem as a PCI serial controler. What you do to fix it is ignore Windows opinion and "TELL" it what hardware is installed. Thats about it. :)
Hope that helps. If you live in the Harrisburg PA area and are looking for an IT/Helpdesk soulition provider please e-mail me your needs or a resum'e.

i need a driver for pci serial controller... or any solution for the problem of not detected pci modem,etc...any help is welcome

I had the same problem.
There's a sticker on my modem saying :
1456VQH-R INT1. The manufacturer for this one is Dynalink. Download their 1456VQH-R/1456VQH-R1 W9x-driver and extract it to a floppy. Select the floppy when W9x asks for the PCI Serial Controller drivers. Done.

I have my modem properly installed and so does he! There are actually pci serial controller cards; however, he is getting on the internet. Are you following me?
