In the BIOS setup it gives you the option to have a system password or a power-on password. Could anyone please tell me the difference between these two?
Thanks.

A power on password is just what it is. You power the unit on and it prompts you for a password. A system password is a password that protects the system bios when someone tries to access it.

Thanks for the response, could you also tell me if there is any way (other than removing the BIOS battery thing) to bipass a power-on password, i.e. any command buttons such as F10, F2 or Ctrl-Alt-Esc?
Thanks again for your help.

That may not even do it. You may have to move a jumper over, start the system, shut the system down, move the jumper back over and then the passwords should be cleared. If the unit is laptop you will most likely have to contact the manufacturer to clear the passwords.

Thats good then, I wasn't looking to bipass it, just making sure no-one else could without taking my comp apart!
So just finally, with a power-on password will anybody be able to do anything at all on my computer (without switching the jumper)?
Thanks.

Nope, nothing can be done to the unit. As soon as the bios loads it will prompt you for a password.

What kind of computer is it? Some have reset switches and contact points that are fairly easy to get to if you know what you are doing. Although most people would still need a users manual or a Hardware Maintence Manual to know how to do it....
