Ok, I just tried changing the RAM in a pc running
windows 98 but when I reconnected the power cord
and screen, etc. the computer would not start up
although the fan would run. Could I have fried the
motherboard or is there any other explanation like
maybe a cable going to hard drive disconnected or
something? pretty important machine so neda get
resolved quickly, can anyone help??

Not sure of the voltage of the new or old RAM
although now even if I put the old RAm back into
place the machine lets out a beep (or double beep)
and then sounds as if it starting up but nothing
happens on the screen, and it IS connected properly.
I then put the new RAM in and still the same
problem. Is there anything else I could have done?
In dire need of help

Buy a new motherboard. I had the same problem with a floppy disk (that I plugged upside down.) but this time, make sure you RAM cards are compatible by asking the one who sold you the new motherboard. It worked with me, but, don't do the same error that I did, check the processor speed because my new mother board came with 333MHz and my old processor runned on 400MHz. My father traded the 400 proc. for a 64mg ram card without checking the proc. speed. Also pay attention to the built-in card in your motherboard. If your new motherboard doesn't have the same built-in cards as you acient, you will have to buy them separately. After, build the computer with the working devices of your old computer and the new devices you bought.

One more thing, I have a cable coming
from the hard drive with plastic on the end
with four small pins - looks like it should
be plugged in somewhere but not sure if
it was before and might have inadvertently
disconnected itfrom somewhere although
can't see where - any ideas?
