It is a file that an operating system uses to simulate RAM. This is called virtual memory. Whenever the OS needs more memory than you have in your machine, it stores information in this file.

Hi,

I don't know much about this file but I've done some experiments in my years with this file that maybe you should know about. First off, you can never move or delete the swap file while Windows is running. Second, one time I had this weird problem where my animated cursors wouldn't animate and I deleted the swap file and on the next reboot Windows generated a new (much smaller) swap file and the animated cursors were animated again.
