Subject: svchost.exe - can't delete it???? OS: win98 se CPU/Ram: 1100MHz / 256 RAM

Comment: I did a virus scan 'cos my PC wasn't running how it should be, I had about 254 infected EXE files, named "PE_JEEFO.A" all of which I have now deleted ( excluding one )as they were "uncleanable". There is one infected file left on my PC, which I'm unable to delete as its being used by Windows, here's the way I've been told to delete it ...... "Open Registry Editor. To do this, click Start>Run, type REGEDIT, then press Enter" When I do this I get a message "Can not find the file, make sure the path is correct........" I think perhaps it isn't there 'cos I've deleted it while deleting the infected EXE's? I can't delete this file, can anyone help me? or should I cut my loses and format my PC? Thank you

Reply: (edit)I run the prog and I got this message "THE EXEfix08 PROGRAM ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM!!! The Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE) could not be found Please be advised that the REGEDIT.EXE file was not located in the Directory of: C:\WINDOWS ... File not found - c:\windows\regedit.exe" So I still can't delete the source of the virus. I think its format time. This is a decent prog to have, wish I'd of come here sooner, before deleting the 254 EXE files.

Reply: (edit)Yep, I wonder if you did a scanreg /restore...I don't know if the registry will be there...Worth a try. Boot to dos At the C: type scanreg /restore Pick a date that was earlier than the day it stated giving you problems..If the registry is there, Removing Autostart Entries from the Registry Removing autostart entries from the registry prevents the malware from executing during startup. Open Registry Editor. To do this, click Start>Run, type REGEDIT, then press Enter. In the left panel, double-click the following: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft> Windows>CurrentVersion>RunServices In the right panel, locate and delete the entry or entries: PowerManager = “%Windows%/SVCHOST.EXE" Note:%Windows% refers to the default Windows directory, which is usually C:\Windows or C:\WINNT. Close Registry Editor. http://it.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/security_info/ve_detail.php?VName=PE_JEEFO.A Post back

Reply: (edit)Could he not restore regedit using SFC? Files in 'use by Windows' can often be deleted in Safe Mode or, failing that, from a DOS boot.

Reply: (edit)Yeah, you should be able to use SFC. But just in case, I'll email you regedit. Unzip it, copy the unzipped file to a floppy and copy it to the c:\windows folder on the ailing computer.

Reply: (edit)OK, it's there. Post back results. You probably have more missing files and may end up having to reinstall windows over itself.

Reply: (edit)You're welcome. Installing windows over itself should allow you to keep the existing software. Post back if you decide to do it that way and need some help. But if you're worried about the viruses you may want to reformat and start over.

Reply: (edit)Think I will format and start over .... 80% of the prog on my PC won't work now, so maybe its best, there are files everywhere, and nothin' really works.

Reply: (edit)... sorry about that Spliffs - I made that assumption based on your somewhat unorthodox email addy. Good luck with the reinstall, and maybe maintain some real-time virus scanning to save future headaches. AVG is a freebie, I've used it on some of my older machines. Not sure what else is out there - things periodically change.
