Hi everybody.

Of course, I'm writing this message from another computer at home. A few minutes ago, I turned my PC on for Internet surfing with IE6 SP1. When I try to enter this site, after loading the page the window is closed. I tried with other sites and they are OK. I cleaned my browser's cache and the problem is still there. I don't know where's the problem.

Thank you in advance for your help on this.

Something new: If I enter directly to http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/wwwboard.html I can stay, but Computing.net home page refuses to stay open.

Are you using some sort of PopUp Killer on the other computer? Computing.net may have been inavertently added as a popup.

My girlfriend did that on accident with one of her favorite sites.

Yes, Mesich. I use Pop-Up Stopper Companion but, first, I have Computing.net in my list of allowed pop-ups, and second, I tried deactivating Pop-Up Stopper and got the same results.

What operating system are you running? IE 6 was actually meant to be used with ME or higher. Many people don't know this.

I have Windows 98 SE, but I've used IE6 since it left the beta stage and never happened something like this.

MS do claim IE6 is OK with W98. Just the same I would probably go for your opinion rather than their claims.

I've only just moved up from IE501 to 55 and note that the darned think takes much longer when you tell it to work off-line. Goodness knows how I would get on with IE6. Ironically the problem I was trying to cure proved to be something else, so I needn't have bothered.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you and yours. That little 'un will be watching the lights twinkle I reckon.

Season's greetings too to anyone else who hits this posting.

Sory about this aside. Have you tried inserting the "www." bit after "http://" to see if this makes any difference?

Since you said it only happens on this website it might be worth dropping Justin Webber an email to see if he can throw any light on it. You will find it in the "Thanks" entry on the left (last entry).

I assume nothing has appeared under IE Security/Restricted Sites (Sites button) and that you have not goy a Hosts file setup in c:\windows ?

Very odd symptom - I'm about out of ideas.

Hey Derek!

Your hosts file suggestion made me look into my Windows folder and in fact, it was gone! I use KaZaA Lite and its installation comes with this file, so I extracted it again and everything seems to be normal now!

Which could be the reason for this "dissappearance"? Thank you very much again, Derek!

It was just a hunch. Actually it was it's "presence" that I thought might be the problem, so I'm glad I somehow put you on the right track just the same. No idea what Kazaa use it for but you can peer into it from NotePad which may give you some clue.

I use it as a sorta pop-up killer. If you want to know more about Hosts file (no extension) look here:

HOSTS

I just collect their growing file from time to time, save it as text, rename it Hosts and plonk it in c:\windows. I love it.

I did have a minor back button quirk on computing.net so I killed the appropriate entry (mediamgr.ugo.com).

Thanks for popping back.
