Hi,

I am installing windows 98 on a old laptop, and keep getting "Error SU0013 setup cannot create files on your startup drive and cannot setup windows"

I have reformatted the drive several times, and I am able to run an error free scan disk and chkdsk, but win setup keeps stopping. Any ideas??

Thanks.

See if any of this applies:

SU Errors

But often those errors are caused by bad RAM.

None of the errors listed there apply to the problem I am getting. It seems to occur at exactly the same spot every time, so I dont think it is a RAM issue. Seems that Windows has a problem with my system, but as usual the idiots at Microsoft are incredibly vauge with any error info they give.

SU0013 errors seem to involve partition errors. Did you delete all partitions and recreate the partition(s) before formatting? Did you use a partition manager and change the size of the disk?

Accepted that MS error messages can leave a lot to be desired. Whether that justifies branding everyone at MS as "idiots" is rather doubtful. I've never tried to design an OS so I wouldn't really know.

I agree with wizard-fred. Delete all partitioning and repartition.

If I remember correctly, you need to disable the Boot sector protection in the BIOS to overcome this. Most BIOS's have an option to protect the boot sector, meaning it will not allow it to be overwritten, something some viruses like to do. Windows needs to do this on install, so you need to disable it.

Different BIOS's have different names for it, it should say something about Boot Sector protection, or possibly mention Virus protection.
