It all depends on what you want to do. Most office supply/department store fax machines are cheap and you get what you pay for. If you want to send and receive info reguardless of the paper type or legibility then one of these will do. But if you want to send and receive high quality faxes then go for a plain paper machine. Unfortunately most of these also double as copiers and are not cheap. Names like Richo, Cannon, etc. are amoung the leaders.
You can send faxes through your computer with the right equipment and software. You need a modem that supports faxing (most do) and software like Bitware to send documents made in a word processor on your computer. If you want to fax paper documents then you will need a good quality scanner. If you want to make changes to the document once it is scanned into your computer you will need a good OCR software (OCR stands for optical character recognition - it 'sees' the document as words not as a single image).
If you are real serious about faxing and have deep pockets you can purchase an all-in-one machine that is a laser copier/printer/fax machine.
Hope this helps.

1 reminder...fax machine is just like printer, if you get a printer the manufacturer will make you paying back by the ink. You know what I mean??? IF,...I am saying if, the fax machine you are looking at is cheap, better be careful if is it VALUABLE...Good luck!
