I hope someone can help. I recently reformated my Hard drive and am currently using WIN ME and I cant install my soundcard because of a stupid missing ".sys" file.

The file is "es198x.sys"

It tells me to insert the Win ME cd and I do, but I guess it's not in there. I appreciate any help at all. Thanks lots.

Have you done a search of the ME CD to see if that file is buried in a directory? Just opening the CD's root often will not allow a device install to locate the file it needs.

If the above suggestions don't help.
Sometimes windows asks for a win install CD when he really needs something else. When he asks for the ME CD try inserting your sound card CD.

I tried all that. I did find the file in the Win ME cd, and also exactly where the pc looks for it. It's exactly in the same spot that it says it isn't. I tried copying it to differnt spots to facilitate the process but it won't work. Anymore suggestions?

Thanks so far.

Simply download the driver for your card from www.esstech.com You will waste too much time searching disks. If you know what model of ESS card you have, just get the driver. If the driver is in a zip file, just unzip it to a folder and use the update driver function in your device manager, and point the system to that folder, or use the add new hardware function in the control panel, and use the same method. Good luck.

I've tried all these suggestions, but nothing good has come out of this.

I thought that the drivers on the Win 98, and/or ME copied onto the hard drive. I keep thinking maybe something happened while I was installing either 98 or ME and it might have missed a couple. Any other ideas?

Again, thanks a lot.

Try this... Go to the web site of the sound card's manufacturer and download the latest drivers for your card and if possible put them on a floppy. If not put them on the HDD in thier own folder. Once that is done use Add/Remove to remove the sound card drivers. Delete any left over sound card folders. Go to the Device Manager and remove the sound card. Shutdown the computer completely. Restart and let Windows find the card. When it asks for the drivers point it to the floppy.

I just had the same problem, but I corrected it. I went to
http://www.drd.dyndns.org/dll/winme/es198x.sys

and downloaded the needed file to floppy. When it asks for ME disk hit browse and searched A: it will copy the file needed. It may ask for some other similar .ex and .dll files too. Find a place to download them and do the same. It worked for me. I can hear now!
