stuck on 16 bit wont change to 256

Specs: Windows 98
I have a lap top, running win 98. To play anything it says to change to 256. 16 bit is the only thing there. What and/or how do I change it, or can I?

Please post laptop manufacturer and model number. Then we can go to the mfg website to see what the specs and drivers are.

"To play anything..."

Although highly unlikely, it's possible that the video card card doesn't support support 256, only 16-bit, OR whatever it is you are trying to play only supports 256 colors. Again, however this is highly unlikely; I've never come across a computer that couldn't step video >down< a level.

Is it stuck on 16-bit or 16 color? They are 2 completely different things. 16 color means that you haven't installed the video drivers & the graphics are running in basic VGA mode.

It's it's actually 16-bit, then you do have drivers installed. To switch to 256 color, try the following. I don't have a Win98 system for reference so this is how it's done in XP, hopefully it's similar:

- right click on the desktop
- click Properites
- click the Settings tab
- click the Advanced button
- click the Adapter tab
- click List All Modes....
- select the setting you want from the list
- click OK
- click Apply
