Strange question

I got a message as I was about to reboot my system: "do you want to abort the current download?" I said yes. The last time I saw that message something happened and I got a virus in my OS. What was going on, and were the virus and the message related?

A better question is 'Are you using a firewall?'. If not, you should get one.

This is not neccessarily virus or trojan related. Though it could be.
I have seen popups which obtain your permission to install programs on your computer in very deceptive ways. Click the OK or more information button and they start downloading. These programs might be adware or often dubious malware removal tools. You know the ones, they find hundreds of problems and offer to fix them after you pay them.
Stopping the download by shutting down will have stopped the program from installing. Scan your system with an antivirus program. Also scan for Ad/Spyware using reputable programs. I recommend Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware.

G'day,
Another useful tip for future reference: if you see a screen that you din't ask for or don't recognise, then use ctrl-alt-del to stop the task. If that doesn't work try alt-F4 to close down the window. Go to the security forum and learn how to arm yourself with all the necessary tools. A sad but true fact of life on the net these days. Remember: NOBODY WILL GIVE YOU ANYTHING FOR NOTHING!!
