There are some odd noises coming from my hd (sounds like a motorbike at high rev) and the noises are intermittent. just started over the last few days. it's definitely not from my speakers.
is my hd on the way out or maybe something to do with the fan? i'm completely computer illiterate pls help thanks

Take a piece of metal (a screwdriver will do) and after opening the case, place it on the HD's case. Do you hear noise at the other end. If so, then backup quick and get a new one. Most likely the spindle bearing.

Depending on how old the HD is it might be a sign of it going out. Any weird noise from the hard drive isn't good.

You can always do a scandisk to check for bad sectors, but I have seen where the disk is good but other parts moving parts fail.

YEAP! i guess it depends on how important the data on it is. I had an old HD, that i didnt care about. I acctually had to open the case and spin the disk inside with my finger to get it to boot. Sounds crazy but i think i had that thing for about 7-8 months before it finally broke down completely. =)

That isnt what i wanted to hear, i've had it running with the case off and the noise appears to be coming from the power supply. this isnt just an old computer used for games, it's my home business computer and livlihood. Should i see if the problem goes away or take it to a store or even back up my data and scrap it? thanks for your replies

If the noise is coming from the power supply,
it most likely is the fan. A new fan only
costs about $15. However, you need to take
the power supply apart to get to it.
