A strange one for me - when I copy a pic/graphic from any site it is shown as 'save as' a jpe file? I can change it to jpg, as I prefer, but why the jpe format? Where can I correct this setting so that the default is jpg? Is it possible to change it?
Any suggestions?

Are you abosolutely certain about this?

You computer normally offers to save using whatever extension is displayed and doesn't change it. Right click the image on the website and see what it says in Properties. If it says .jpe then check out some other websites - I'm thinking that most will be .jpg

You can associate .jpe with whatever viewer you use for .jpg by highlighting the saved file then holding shift, selecting Open With, and finding your viewer. You then set it to open .jpe with that viewer every time.

I should correct myself here, this involves only jpg files. Gif files d/l as gif files, png as png and bmp as bmp. When I right-click on a jpg on the web it is a jpg but when I d/l it, it changes to jpe. For example on http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php. That large pic is jpe when I’ve downloaded it. Yes I can change it before or after d/l, no problem. It is just such a nuisance this extra step. I’ve allocated a dif icon to jpg files on my puter and the jpe files stand out like a sore thumb because it reverts to the XnView icon.
I use VJPEG (http://www.stereopsis.com/vjpeg/) to view files but it cannot be used with jpe files and that is a hassle.

That's very odd and I've no useful ideas for you. Out of curiosity I searched the registry for .jpe and noted that in:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Media Type\Extension

on my machine the "Source Filter" entry is:
{7DF62B50-6843-11D2-9EEB-006008039E37}

which is the same as the one for .jpg (and others).

As always there's a similar entry elsewhere.

It might be interesting to see if yours is any different.

Err...I've kinda assumed you use IE.

Thanks Derek, ditto this side for all three. I then made a back-up of my Registry and searched with jpe. Found an entry in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg. A key named ‘Extension’ set to " jpe" which I changed to " jpg" and now it is all back to normal (space before the extension).
Not a good solution because I do not know the why and how.

Obviously some or other prog or installation caused this key to change but now I can keep a watch and see if it ever reverts back to jpe and then attempt to back track which prog I used last.

If you do not mind will you plse check and compare the above key on yr puter?

Checked my W98SE registry and that Extension entry is .jpg (there was a dot as shown but no space). It might be interesting to change it because I feel certain I've never done anything with that particular entry.

Seems like you are onto it, although I can't explain the technicalities either. Sometimes that's how it goes.

Oops, you’re right, there is a dot, absolutely minuscule. I should have noticed that.
Thanks Derek for yr trouble and the Reg search idea, that solved it. I suppose I can carry on living with the unexplained technicalities :-)

It can sometimes be handy to compare registries when problems arise. Folk on here have helped me out of similar holes.

You did well to find it and thx for popping back.

.JPE and .JPG are both extensions for jpeg files. In dos 8.3 format a file with a .jpeg extension is truncated to just .jpe. It only takes one save, one copy or one transmission of the file in 8.3 format for the extension to permanently change from .jpeg to .jpe. I think that's why you often see them that way.

I hadn't realized there was a registry entry that specified the extension of .jpeg files when they're saved.

Thanks Derek for the additional info/link.
DAVEINCAPS, I’ll keep an eye on the 8.3 format issue and see if I can pick it up, thanks.
