LAN: Deny File Transfer Permissions (Unix: chmod, Windows: Close the port, deny perms etc)

Internet

Blcok the Kazaa/Morpheus/P2P is for cheap hacker wannabees Port. Usually 6338 but you can also block ads.morpheus.com, because without the ads, morpheus will refuse to run. also you try packet analyzing a test morpheus connection, and block that port, IP and even go so far as block that domain. Then find the kid responsible and castrate him/her/it

I think that it's all the kids! I spent yesterday afternoon taking of yahoo messenger, msn messenger, ICQ, that other ICQ thing (with the little penguin or duck or whatever it is!!), South Park Mario Brothers and other miscellaneous programs.

Then I ran norton and on average for each computer there were 8 to 10 viruses. Then I ran adaware to remove that damned comet cursor and all the gator software you otherwise can't get rid of!!

Even though there are only 12 computers in this little section, that's a lot of hassle.

ANd this morning, MSN messenger was back on there, as well as ICQ on some of the others.

So thanks for the tips. I was thinking that maybe a firewall would stop ALL exe's from being downloaded (over the net). Which ones have that kind of function? I'm feel very new to the idea of a firewall! *(They only just got cable ....)

Skye, try Norton Internet Security.....it is probably the easiest to configure and provides excellent protection.

maybe look into the option of deleting these programs another way (by booting, by scheduled request ..)

these programs (MSN, ICQ, ..) can be installed in any directory, but the name of the executable could be searched and deleted

all depends how smart these guys are .. whats the age of the students ?

Skye, I work for a school too and understand your problem completely!!

You can disable MSN messenger and Yahoo messenger and AOL messenger etc etc. But it means making a change on each computer to stop them from being installed.

NOTE: they will still be able to download the programs just not run them on your network.

It will be tediuos work if u have a large network, unless you have a way of working on one PC and replicating changes across the network. If u want I can email instructions on how to do this. Email and let me know.

What sort of network do u have?

I have cut the problem down a little but still have to regularly search users work areas on the servers for .exe or .mp3 files or anything else I dont want them to have!

If you do find a way to disable the download of .exe files, please let me know!

I like Andy's suggestion best about using an Internet security program to stop them misusing the school computers. Norton Internet Security is a good choice (www.norton.com), and so is Net Nanny (www.netnanny.com)

There is a program out there called Deepfreeze. Check it out at Deepfreezeusa.com. It's a must for a school environment.

I already have a similiar piece of software to deepfreeze. Protects all system files and if changes are made they are reset to what they were after re-booting. This tool has to be switched off before changes can be made to the system.

The problem is users can download files to their own work areas (allocated disk space on servers)and there seems to be no way to stop them downloading executable files..... other than to disable their internet access.
And being a school we cannot do that because the internet is widely used in all lessons and subjects. Can stop them running the setup programs for any messenger programs, e.g MSN messenger, but not downloading the setup program or any other executable files in the first place.

Looks like we will have to keep deleting .exe files manually!! If anyone out there finds a way.... do let us know!

How about Windows 2000 - installing that, and setting up the file permissions would do. I accidentally found out how to do that by allowing users all access to the Program files, but not to install programs...

What OS do you have?
Deep Freeze looks like an answer, but I couldn't find any hard specs - the price is decent though.

No way to tell which student is downloading things they are told not to download? Punishment for doing so? How about no access to computers after breaking the rule. If this means they fail the course i think this would curb some of it.

Have everything installed to make them think twice about it and can tell who was using computers at which time.... trouble is I have had virus attacks (even though I have virus protection in place!) down to them downloading infected files and email attachments. For reasons like this that I am looking at ways to stop users downloading files from internet.

Using win NT 4 and win98 stations.
