Hi everyone,
I'm trying to get a USB Canon MP390 (multifunction printer) working on my computer. The computer freezes and when I hit CTR-ALT-DEL I see that stimon.exe is not responding. I can print if I end stimon.exe, but I can't use the scanner. Stimon is in my start-up menu. Some people say delete it, some don't.
Could it be corrupted? Is there any way to fix it?
Thanks, in advance, for any help.
Lauren

Don't delete it, although you can prevent it from starting with Windows - use msconfig to do that.
It is a Windows file - you may want to see if restoring a fresh copy from the CD helps at all.
I'm not insensitive, I just don't care.

thanks jboy,
i tried taking stimon out of the start-up menu just to see if that would work. the computer started up okay, but when i went to scan it froze and this time i got Nprotect Not Responding. not only that, but the box started making weird sounds like the creepy throat girl off the Grudge. i quickly shut the printer off which fixed it right away.

Well, likely you do need it running in order to use your USB scanner - just don't need it 'always on'
Nprotect sounds like something you don't want running, as it seems to be adware.
Do you scan for adware with spybot, Ad-aware or similar?

Nprotect
This is the Norton Utilities program that protects your Recycle Bin by adding an extra layer of safety to the deletion of information from your PC.Recommendation :
Leave untouched. If you want to remove it, do so via the Norton Utilities’ control screen.

Yeah, I know Nprotect is connected to Norton. But why would it suddenly not respond when I had my printer plugged in?
I've checked out all my start up programs and eliminated some of them (&, yeah, I know about ad aware). What I'm really wondering is why my computer seems to hate this new printer so much? If it's not stimon that doesn't respond, it's something else (ie Nprotect). I don't know what to do, and I really need it.

Sounds like a resource conflict between your video card and usb ports. Move the video card to another slot if possible, then uninstall completely the printer. Then try to reinstall it. You may want to try installing the printer with a regular printer cable instead of the usb cable, if the printer has that option.
Good Luck.

Resource conflicts can be determined by checking Device Manager

True, but not always. Since PCI uses IRQ sharing some conflicts remain harder to find. It's at this point where the user really needs to know what resources need to be with what equipment...
Hope she finds what she needs...
