Scott;
Do you have a phone hooked up to the line?
If you do.... dial 1 then listen for noise.
You should hear nothing but dead silence. Any noise or crackling at all causes big problems.hope it helps.

Yes, I have a phone line connected. I have not noticed any line noise. Any other suggestions please.

One other thing that I just thought of that might be causing a problem for me. right before my isp stopped working I had downloaded adaware6 and ran it. I am not sure how soon after that it stopped working. Could that have anything to do with it. How can I tell if that is causing the problem. Thanks! ScottD

Hi try going to this site http://www.modemsite.com/56k/index.asp
it has alot to read on modem problems.adaware should not have caused isp to stop working. adaware you can undo any changes made by going to objects in quarantine.

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling compuserve software. I have uninstalled old modem and reinstalled new modem. Deleted modem from device manager and reinstalled. Had compuserve software detect the and added the dial up numbers again. I have tried to use another ISP (Earthlink, Netzero, AOL) and none of them work either. Still doesn't work :(

How about giving some information about the modem. Your introduction was just "My Modem"!:-(
Any help question about the problem Device without its hardware and software specifications leaves a large vacuum. Troubleshooters are left with very little choice but to fill that with their own experiences with a limited number of devices they are familiar with. Providing the make and Model of the problem device often brings up issues not considered earlier. No question is complete without details of the computer and its OS interacting with the Device.

Hi
I highly doubt that ad-aware caused the problem but if you want to test that theory... there is a restore feature in ad-aware...start the program and click on the quarentined items section> view items> hilight and restore the ones from that day.
If that doesn't work you can re run the scan to clean em up again. (unless you deleted the items in quarentine)
Until then I hope someone comes up with better idea
If you want to check it for virus you could remove the hdd and slave it to another pc and run updated virus scan on that drive. If any files are found infected write them down in case they are needed system files that will need replaced from 98 cd. (you must know someone with 98 cd you can borrow....)
hope there is some help there...
Good luck

If all else fails it's possible that your Winsock2 settings got messed up after removing a program with Ad-aware as stated at the link below. You may want to try the LSPFix.exe. Download it to a floppy and transfer it to the messed up computer and run it. Read the page first and read the lspfix.txt at the bottom of the page. Here's the link.

could'nt find your previous post soooooo....have you tried reinstalling your dial up networking (dun)in control panel addremove/windows/setup One thing i have noticed is when I've had to reinstall stuff I always have better luck if I defrag the drive first before i reinstall so bad data can be overwritten .Do you have the proper network/ protocals/ adapter setting and such. Do you have client for microsoft networks installed? tcp enabled ? dial up adapter? poke around the network section in the control panel and see if everythings there. have you tried running system file checker to look for corrupt files?
Just trowin out my 2 cents lol

Thanks everyone for all the idea and suggestions. It turns out that AdAware6 was causing the problems. Apparently it quarantined some files that I needed to connect to the internet. I removed all the files from quarantine as suggested in one of the replys above and then re-booted my pc. I can now connect to the internet. Thanks again to all those that helped!
ScottD

ScottD, You may indeed be able to get on the Internet after you removed those items from quarantine in Ad-aware but you put the Adware/Spyware that Ad-aware originally removed right back into your system. Ad-aware was only doing its job by removing those parasites and like the link I gave you for the LSPFix explains that certain Spyware programs which Ad-aware removes can mess up your Winsock2 settings. Just thought I'd pass this on to you and if you're not concerned about Spyware on your system it's your call.

Thanks for the advice. I will definately check it out. My first concern was that I could get online. Second concern is spyware/adaware. Thanks again. ScottD
