i have the stealth_boot.c virus on a blank 40gb hdd with no partitions... I have a floopy drive, and i have tried fdisk /mbr to remove the virus but no luck. i have a win98 boot disk, but not clear on what to do with it. i dont have any virus scan software so i will need a free/shareware version of any virus scanner. any help will be appreciated... thanks.

I am pretty sure, because after doing it i got the same virus message as before, so then in cmos i turned off the scanner, and tried it again, then turned it back on and still the virus msg was there.

The boot sector virus is transferred from an infected floppy to the hard drive and vice versa, each time you boot up with the infected floppy.

You have to boot with a new, virus free Win 98 boot floppy that must be WRITE PROTECTED.
To write protect the floppy, flick the little door on the bottom left hand corner of the diskette, so that you can see through the hole.
If the boot floppy you have has been in the computer, and was not write-protected, then it is full of the virus. THROW IT AWAY after breaking it apart !

You can get a clean boot disk by downloading from a clean computer ( NOT yours ) at www.bootdisk.com

Then reboot with the a new clean write-protected boot floppy and run FDISK /MBR again.
This might be enough to clear the virus, or you may need specific cleaner for stealth.boot c

No, I don't use online Messaging.

What is the exact wording of the virus message you are getting ?

Disable boot secor virus protection in BIOS and then run FDISK /MBR
and then turn the protectection back to enabled.

Here is a free download that is said to remove boot sector viruses
Really small file size
Download and unzip and copy btprt102.exe to your boot floppy
There is also a readme file

http://www.simtel.net/pub/dl/51891.html

Installation is very simple.
All you have to do is to is run
BTPRT102 at DOS prompt after you have booted with your boot floppy.

Hi Derick
If that is the only message you are getting, then it is probably because you have got the Boot Sector Virus protection still enabled in the BIOS while you are trying to install Windows.

To install the OS, you must have the BIOS Virus protection DISABLED.

How did you find out that you had stealth.boot c ?

And, why do you think the hard drive is not partitioned ?
Did you run FDISK /STATUS to check ?

Ditch Cfdisk - regular FDISK is fine.
What to do
1. DISABLE Boot Sector Virus Protection in BIOS
2. Boot up with your WIN 98 diskette ( write protected for ever )
3. Run FDISK
4. Answer YES to large disk support
5. Choose option 3 to delete all partitions
6. Then choose option 1 to create a primary DOS partition
7. YES to use whole disk size and set to active
8. ESC to leave FDISK
9. CTRL + ALT + DEL to reboot with floppy still in drive
10. Start with CDROM support
11. At A:\ type FORMAT C: /S
If you get a bad command error, change to D: and type FORMAT C: /S
12. After formatting is finished, run the BTPRT102 program again
13. If all looks good, then run SETUP from E: to install Windows

Good luck !

After step 11, you will have Win 98 boot files on the hard drive, so the drive will be bootable without the need for a boot floppy.
Run BTPRT102 from the floppy again to reinstall it.
Then take out the floppy, and reboot two or three times to see if the utility detects a virus again.
If not, then boot from your Win 2K CD and run setup.
It will reformat for Win 2K and install your OS.

Come on everyone, what harm can a little cute, boot virus do, shoot if you didn't know it was there before the virus scan, why change things, is it harming you? Anyone interested in downloading windows 95 plus! with 15 trojans! they're all harmless, I THINK!
