Had a friend upgrade motherboard and he reloaded win98. Worked fine. I loaded some games for my kids and now have trouble on startup. Computer boots up like normal, however, when done all we seen is the wallpaper with no icons or taskbar. Unable to navigate and clicking on mouse does nothing. Can use cntr-alt-del to shut down. I can get into safe mode.

Boot the pc in safe mode, goto control panel, and remove the games you installed. see if it works then. if so, add the games one at a time, if the problem happens again after one of the games is installed, don't install that game.

When this happens (often with some games), I usually re-install Windows98 on top of itself and it fixes the problem(s). Sometimes a game replaces critical Windows display elements with some of its own and that will give you the "no desktop" problem.
