In msconfig under the startup tab, I noticed that Norton's and ZoneAlarm both have several different things loading at start up. Do all of these items need to be set to load at start up for these 2 programs to run correctly? I don't do an automatic update of my antivirus definitions because it was causing some illegal operation errors on start up so I do it manually every week (I mention this only because I don't see a need for that particular part of the program to load). Here is a list of the programs I'm questioning:

ZoneAlarm:
VSmon.exe -service
zoneal~1.exe
minilog.exe - service

Nortons:
ccapp.exe
ccregvfy.exe
ccevtmgr.exe
sbserv.exe~ reg

Also, does anybody know what "c:windows\system\xl.exe start" is? I've never noticed it under the startup tab before. I apologize for my lack of knowledge about this but I'm just trying to eliminate what I don't need and it seems excessive that these 2 programs have so many things starting up on boot up.

BTW, in case you don't feel appreciated, let me assure you that you are, you've all helped me out several times in the past. Thanks in advance for this one as well!

VsMon.exe is neccessary for Zone Alarm to run as is Zoneal~1.exe.

Minilog.exe is not necessary. It creates and intrusion log and if you do not want this then uncheck log alerts in Zone Alarm.

CCapp along with ccevtmgr.exe needs to run Norton Antivirus.

Ccregvfy.exe checks the registry entries for Norton at start up to ensure that it has not been corrupted. I would leave it checked also.

Sbserv.exe~ reg is part of Nortons Script blocking.

Not sure on the c:windows\system\xl.exe start. Sounds a little fishy as it is an unknown, at least to me, executable file that resides in the system folder.

I would download Spybot and run it.

xl.exe would seem to be XtreamLok License Manager:

"License manager for xLok (XtreamLok) - prevents software being reverse engineered" (?)

Always a good idea to run Spybot or similar to ferret out any parasites etc.

I ran Ad-Aware earlier and it did not detect that program as any sort of spyware. It is XtreamLok License Manager. Do you know what that program is for? Thanks on the answers on my other startup questions. It's a great help!

BeckyB, Check out the first link on page 2 of the XL.exe Search link below my name (Homepage:) along with the other links. If you can find that xl.exe file right click it and choose Properties to see if there's any info as to which program it is.
