Comment:
After "attempting" to remove McAfee virus/firewall from my computer I now get an error message before starting windows that a McAfee VXD file is missing.Since I do not intent to reinstall McAfee again how do I get rid of whatever is requesting this file? All references to McAfee seem to be gone from Reg and Win.INI folders.

If windows boots sometimes it now hangs. It looks to be busy (Hourglass) or not responsive to mouse. Ctrl-Alt-Delete does not work only a hard reboot.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Kent

I assume you searched the registry for the "file name".

Type msconfig in the Run box and see if you can see any mention any McAfee stuff in the startup tab. If so, you can uncheck it for now then remove the registry entry later.

I would also check autoexec.bat and system.ini

msconfig at startup is where I would go first, too. Registry cleaners can also be downloaded and remove program key entries of programs that are no longer in folders.

Zone Alarm makes a good free Internet protection system for Windows 98. It has one file that gets a bit bloated but which can be easily erased periodically. That might be a better alternative than trying to keep a virus checker up-to-date.
