Hi, I am having trouble with my computer. I have everything plugged into a power strip and in the morning I flip the switch on the power strip and then press the ON button on the tower. Often the tower just beeps once as usual and freezes solid. If I push the "reset" button on the tower a few times it will finally turn on and once it gets to the clouds everything is fine. This didn’t used to of happen. I always shut the machine without problem and with no errors. Oh… By the way I use Version 98 SE.

Any error messages?

The single beep tells you that BIOS has successfully passed POST. From there it (BIOS) will attempt to load an operating system. If it can't find one, it will display a message.

Sounds to me like your hard drive is not spinning up quickly enough. I know you keep up to date backups, but it would be a good idea to check. You may need to replace the drive in the not too distant future.

Glad you asked now rather than the usual "Help I can't access my files!"

Isn't that interesting? That is the same word-for-word question asked on the test at the site you have posted in your signature!

Kind of sad if Zach's intent is to spoof credentials in order to be recognized as a 'tech' at Protonic.

Kevin already deleted another one of his posts in XP Forum. The one that deals with using his friend's XP disc.

Yeah - I'd associated the name with the XP forum.

At best, he's guilty of deception - we prefer to help folks with real computer problems

I messaged one of the moderators at that site. See below:

FYI, whoever uses this e-mail address:

techguy@weezer.org

is getting your test questions for potential techs answered at www.computing.net.
Just thought you might like to know.
jude@carmeliway.com

And I received this answer:

Helo

Thanks for that information. However I have lkooked the "answers" over and they are not really right.

You know what I think? I think maybe they were testing this forum over there. In other words they they were like, "Our forum's better than your forum." And I found the tome of their answer a little condescending.

BTW, what fordman failed to mention in that post was that this system ran off of a UPS. (The system specs are given prior to the questions.) If the UPS was plugged into a power strip, and the power strip was being turned off every night, wouldn't that put a drain on the UPS's batteries?

Hmmm, done a little research. It seems fordman@protonic has posted on this site before. Amongst other @s. He occasionally participates in Security and Virus forum.

I found two of his posts recruiting volunteers to help him set up web sites and programming!

I wouldn't think so - UPS provides power for a finite amount of time if household power goes down, but it's also a way to 'smooth out' irregularities (drops & spikes)

Perhaps you should have contacted their founder:

Emile Axelrad

(heh)

The correct answer might have included telling the user to leave the UPS connected and switch off the UPS. Of course tech support will know that from the original post!

Perhaps they want answers that include letting the UPS charge before turning on. You know that massive drain when a UPS charges! Oh and direct them to buy a new power supplied from our sponsored link. Such undervoltage should not permit a power good signal and the computer shouldn't even begin POST!

Jude, did you think before posting your email address?

Yeah - I suspect that item was included in the hypothetical parameters in order to rule out power fluctuations as a possibility, but.. who knows?

Actually, I didn't think before posting my e-mail address -- only after the fact. But I have my e-mail visible in this forum anyway. I have pretty much airtight security on my e-mail from my ISP. (Spamblocker from Earthlink) If it doesn't come from someone in my contacts, I don't get it. All I get is a notification of Suspect E-mail. I can then view it online and manually send it to my Inbox if I wish, add the sender to my contacts, or have it deleted and block the sender and/or domain. If I block, they go straight to a Trash folder where they are automatically deleted after a time of my choosing.

They call it Spamblocker, but it also catches e-mails infected with viruses. Pretty good stuff.
