I would like to know if someone could help me out with some video e w98 startup problems. First of all when i turn it on my pc, the pages of dos that usually shows before comes to the screenpage of my desktop, doesn´t appears. Then when i come to the page of my desktop, shows it normally. But here shows up the second one, i mean, before ask me for my password, everythings freezes, comes up a message saying that MPREXE caused an invalid operation and needs to be closed...and after showed for two times everything hangs, freezes... And i have tryied everything ( that i know of course ). I mean i don´t have access to dos, because the video doesn´t work on dos and aslso don´t have access to the windows because the system hangs on startup. If anyone could help me out, i 'll appreciate.

On some older computers you will get no display in Dos modes unless you assign an IRQ for VGA in the bios.

On my Aug. 1999 Epox computer, which has an Award bios, the setting Assign IRQ for VGA is on the PNP/PCI Configuration page.

Derek's link freezes my IE 5.5 in 98SE.

Error message: "Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll"
(also includes MPREXE.exe Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module KERNEL32.DLL)

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if your password list (PWL) file is damaged.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/187...

Solution: the above article describes how you cure the problem in Windows by deleting all *.pwl files.

If you can't get into Windows -
try Safe mode - Command prompt
(press F8 repeatedly while booting, don't hold it down, select Command Prompt from the menu that appears.

If Safe mode won't work, start up the computer with a Win 98 Startup disk, or a bootable Win 98 disk, let it load.

At the prompt
type: C: (Enter)
type: cd\Windows (Enter)
type: dir /s *.pwl (Enter)
delete each *.pwl file listed
e.g.
del C:\Windows\Ralph.pwl
.........

Unlikely.

Err Msg: MPREXE.exe Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module KERNEL32.DLL

Nope. That doesn't work for me either.
That's really odd. Derek's link works fine until you paste it here.

go to http://www.microsoft.com
top right - type 178084 in the search box

All of the links work fine for me on XP. My #1 was posted from a W98SE machine and worked fine then too. Looks like you have a problem but I don't think #3 to #6 are related in any way to the problem posted by andrevie33.

I would test the links out out on another machine.

I have no idea why those links freeze my IE 5.5 in 98SE - no other links on this site do, that I know of. Do you have IE 5.5 on your 98SE machine?

Response 4 and 5 are the same link, and how to find the same link, as yours.

No, I'm using IE6 on my W98SE machine. Dunno, try IE Repair maybe or IE6 if your machine can take it (or you want it).

I recall there are some issues around that can affect some links in IE.

As far as I can see, only responses #1 and #2 are replies to your post. The rest are various asides which are nothing to do with your problem - so don't act on them.
