Use the System Configuration Utility Method.

While in Normal mode, Close all programs.
Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
In the System Configuration Utility, on the General Tab, click the Advanced Button
In the Advanced Troubleshooting Settings dialog box, check Enable Startup Menu. Click OK. Click OK again when the System Configuration Utility reappears.
You will be prompted to restart the computer. Click Yes. The computer will restart in Safe mode.
When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again and uncheck "Enable Start-up Menu." under the Advanced Menu, then click OK and restart your computer.

Derek, Yes, I see that now and was hoping that maybe only his F8 key wasn't working,

amshaver, If your keyboard isn't working at all you should be able to get into the System Configuration Utility (MSCONFIG) by going into your C:\Windows\System folder and locate msconfig.exe then double click it to open it and follow the instructions in my Reply Number 1. This is assuming that you can use your mouse.

Failing that, can you let us know a little more about your problem please? For instance is it the keyboard itself that is totally defunct or have you done something to prevent it from working in Windows?

What is it you are actually trying to do, there may be some other way around it?

Is it a USB keyboard?

I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter

Try entering the BIOS screens and enabling USB keyboard support.

Hi, The driver for the keyboard needed to get into SETUP lives on the BIOS CHIP. If your keyboard wont get you into setup then the Keyboard is bad or the Motherboard has a problem. Make sure the KB is plugged into the KB socket and not the Mouse socket. If no solution then try another Keyboard.

Good Luck, Jim

"Is it a USB keyboard?"
"Try entering the BIOS screens and enabling USB keyboard support."
In that case you must temporarily use a PS/2 connected keyboard to get into the bios Setup. The setting you need to enable is USB legacy support, or USB keyboard and mouse support, or similar. Once that setting is enabled, your USB connected keyboard should work fine if there is nothing wrong with it.

If you are using a PS/2 keyboard, try another PS/2 keyboard.

If your keyboard is a combo type that can be used with either a USB or PS/2 connection, and you are using a USB connection, use the simple adapter that came with the keyboard to convert the connection to PS/2.

We all seem to be trying to fix this problem with insufficient information and by making various assumptions.

What we need is feedback from the poster, in particular along the lines given in my #5 and the question asked by jboy in #6.

... oh, my, yes - it's just like a cute little electronic neighbourhood.

Good grief - kind of what you'd expect if Howdy Doody had a computer (I guess he does)
